Live from NPR News, I'm Dale Willman. Days after fighting began between India and Pakistan. Both sides have agreed to a US-brokered ceasefire that took effect on Saturday, but before then, NPR's Diya Hadid in Mumbai says the fighting was quite intense.
Starting point is 00:00:39 On Saturday, India had actually struck some Pakistani air bases, including one near the capital Islamabad, and that prompted Pakistan to announce an intensified military operation. The fighting was ongoing until about 3 p.m. India time, and then the ceasefire was announced a little bit later. More than 70 people had been killed on both sides, most of them in Kashmir. And these hostilities were the most serious between the two countries since 1971. Just hours after the ceasefire went into effect, both countries accused the other of violating its terms. American and Chinese officials held talks Saturday in the Swiss city of Geneva where
Starting point is 00:01:17 they talked about President Trump's tariffs. The talks will continue on Sunday. As Philip Marx reports, this was the first face-to-face communication between senior officials since Trump imposed the unprecedented tariffs on Chinese products. Looking out over gleaming Lake Geneva and the manicured lawns of a Swiss government villa, US Treasury Secretary Scott Besson and China's Vice President for Economic Affairs He Le Feng seem to have had a lot to talk about. After a couple of hours of initial discussion Saturday morning, they took a break for lunch before continuing their conversations for several hours. Starting point is 00:01:49 frazzled financial markets in recent weeks and driven significant uncertainty in the world's largest two economies. Neither sides made public statements about the content of today's negotiations. For NPR News, I'm Villam Marx in Geneva. Leaders from four major European countries are threatening to increase pressure on Russia if the country does not accept an unconditional 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine. The ceasefire would begin on Monday. The leaders of France, the UK, Germany and Poland say that President Donald Trump also
Starting point is 00:02:18 supports the proposal. Tufts International student Rumeysa Ozturk made her first major public comments at Logan International Airport in Boston Saturday night. Sarah Bettencourt has a report. Ozturk was released from federal immigration detention in Louisiana on Friday after a federal bond hearing. She spent six weeks detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement with no official charges. Her student visa is also revoked.

Starting point is 00:03:40 in the Galapagos Islands. Investors on Wall Street are bracing for the latest inflation and retail sales data out later this week. MPs Rafael Nam says the reports could provide early signs of the effects from President Trump's tariffs. The big unknown in Wall Street is what kind of impact tariffs will ultimately have. One big fear is that they will raise prices across the board as imports become more expensive, so
Starting point is 00:04:05 investors will be keen to see the latest consumer inflation data out on Tuesday, which may already start to show some of the early effects from the tariffs. The other big fear is that consumers will start spending less as a result of higher prices and the general uncertainty about the economy. This week we'll get retail sales numbers on Thursday while retail giant Walmart will report earnings on the same day. Rafael now in PR News. Anthony Edwards hit a baseline three-pointer with a minute 19 remaining to lift the Minnesota Timberwolves over the Golden State Warriors 102-97 on Saturday.
Starting point is 00:04:42 The Timberwolves now have a 2- 1 lead in their second round playoff series. The Boston Celtics, meanwhile, got their first win in the Eastern Conference semi-finals.
