Starting point is 00:00:59 at concerning Kashmir. The latest escalations between the countries started in Kashmir after India accused Pakistani gunmen of killing 26 civilians in late April. Pakistan denies this. The ceasefire on Saturday came after days of military action between the countries that killed more than 70 people. Omkar Khandekar, NPR News, New Delhi. Starting point is 00:01:45 and Ukrainian negotiators meet for talks in Istanbul, Turkey later this week. Putin said Russia would enter the negotiations without preconditions, but wanted a lasting peace settlement that addressed the root causes of the conflict that in the past has included Russian demands Ukraine demilitarize and formally end its NATO ambitions. Putin's proposal came hours after European leaders threatened massive new sanctions.
Starting point is 00:02:07 Should the Kremlin refuse to agree to an immediate month-long ceasefire endorsed by Kiev, President Trump welcomed the prospect of direct talks, calling it a potentially great day for Russia and Ukraine. Charles Mainz, MPR News, Moscow. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy says he'll reduce the number of flights in and out of New York Airport for the next several weeks. New Jersey's largest airport has struggled for more than a week with radar outages and numerous flight delays. The problem in part is a shortage of air traffic controllers. President Trump joined Duffy by phone at one point and he said something that really set off alarm bells for me. He said we're going to give, in his words, President Trump a big beautiful contract to one company. Well, this is complex work. It involves hundreds and hundreds of facilities all across the country, airports all across the country, and there isn't one company that you sign a contract with that can fix this overnight. They're talking about an initial investment of $12.5 billion. That won't be even nearly enough. That's William McGee, and you're listening to NPR News. Today is the first Sunday since Pope Leo XIV became the new leader of the Roman Catholic Church.
Starting point is 00:03:30 The Texas newsroom's Lucio Vasquez visited a church in Houston to see how people are feeling about the future of the religious institution. It's just before Sunday morning mass at St. Mary of the Purification Catholic Church in Houston and lifelong Catholic Angie Spencer says she's thrilled about the new pope. That's what we need. And he's American as well. And he's American, yes, yes, yes. How do you feel about that?
Starting point is 00:03:50 We're real excited about that. Miranda Fontenot-Bassey agrees and hopes Pope Leo carries on the inclusive legacy of Pope Francis, who led the church for over a decade until his death last month. I think he's going to have a good love of people that will make a difference in what the church needs as far as leadership and America needs as a nation. As mass begins, many here are hopeful that an American pope preaching unity could mark a new chapter for the church. For NPR News, I'm Lucio Vasquez in Houston.
Starting point is 00:04:22 Polish officials say a massive fire last year that destroyed a large shopping center in Warsaw was caused by arson ordered by Russia's intelligence services. The complex house some 1,400 shops and other services. Many of the vendors were Vietnamese. One year after the fire Poland's Prime Minister says they know for certain Russia was to blame. Mikho Rantanen had one goal and two assists Sunday as the Dallas Stars beat the Winnipeg Jets 5-2. They now have a 2-1 lead in the second round NHL Western Conference Series.
