President Trump has arrived in Saudi Arabia for the start of a short trip to the Middle
East.
Trump is focused on trying to arrange deals.
One of them could be fostering links between the Saudi government and Israel, but Saudi
leaders say that won't happen without an end to the war in Gaza.
Separately, NPR's Aya Batraoui reports Trump
and his family are striking significant business deals in the region based on personal ties.
Those personal ties are linked to his family's business interests in the Gulf. You know,
just less than two weeks ago, his son, Eric Trump, who runs the family business, the Trump
organization was in the region launching new projects, a Trump hotel tower in Dubai, a
Trump golf course in Qatar.
There's also money from the Gulf flowing into the Trump family's cryptocurrency venture.
And Qatar has just offered Trump a new Boeing airplane to replace one of the aging Air Force
One jets.
And Piers Ehebetraoui reporting. Israel is sending mediators to Qatar for talks to try
to reach a ceasefire in Gaza. The U.S. is trying to jumpstart negotiations after Hamas released a dual U.S.-Israeli citizen
from captivity in Gaza.
And Piers Daniel Estrin has more from Tel Aviv.
21-year-old Edan Alexander is undergoing tests
at an Israeli hospital.
He spoke with President Trump on the phone,
according to U.S. envoy Steve Woodcoff.
The U.S. negotiated directly with Hamas for his
release from Gaza. He's the first Israeli soldier Hamas has freed since capturing about
250 hostages in the October 7, 2023 attacks. Israeli negotiators are meeting for talks in Qatar.
They want to work from a previous U.S. proposal for Hamas to release half of its remaining
living hostages and then
to discuss the terms of ending the war. After a pause in airstrikes to
facilitate Alexander's release, Israel resumed attacks in Gaza targeting Hamas
including at a hospital. Daniel Estrin, NPR News, Tel Aviv. The federal sex
trapping trial against Sean Combs resumes today in New York City and
Pierce Isabella
Gomez Sarmiento reports this follows yesterday's opening statements and testimony from two
witnesses.
Prosecutors alleged that Sean Combs used his businesses to carry out and cover up crimes.
His defense attorneys argued that the rapper and music mogul was in toxic relationships
that had nothing to do with his companies.
After opening arguments, two government witnesses testified.
First, a Los Angeles police officer who was working as a hotel security guard in 2016
described how he responded to an altercation between Combs and his ex-girlfriend, Cassie Ventura.
Video of the incident, which shows Combs kicking and dragging Ventura,
has been widely viewed since CNN obtained and released a version of it last year.
Then, a man who claims Ventura paid him
for sexual encounters that Combs watched took the stand.
He said he witnessed Combs violently attack Ventura
more than once.

The government says consumer prices rose 2.3%
in April from what they were a year ago. But inflation is cooling a little. The consumer
price index was a little higher in March at 2.4%. A new study estimates nearly one in
four children in the U.S. has at least one parent with a substance use disorder. Alcohol use is the most common, as NPR's Ritu Chatterjee reports.
The new study used the latest data from the Household-Based National Survey on Drug Use
and Health and found that nearly 19 million U.S. kids have a parent with a substance use
disorder.
Study author Sean McCabe directs the Center for the Study of Drugs, Alcohol, Smoking and
Health at the University of Michigan.
It makes you realize that the scope of this issue is vast.
McCabe says a significant proportion of those children, 7.6 million, have a parent whose
addiction is severe or moderate as opposed to mild.
The findings are published in the latest JAMA pediatrics.

Officials in India say they have killed three people in the Indian-controlled area of Kashmir
province.
India claims they were terrorists.
This comes after India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire last weekend and followed several
days of the worst fighting between the nuclear-armed neighbors in decades.
An international aviation body has ruled that Russia is responsible for shooting down Malaysia
Flight 17 over Ukraine in 2014.
Nearly 300 people aboard were killed.
The plane was hit by a missile fired by Russian-led separatists.
