Trump speaking in New Jersey before heading back to Washington, D.C., this days after he expressed frustration with the pace of trade negotiations with the E.U. In New York City, a 28-year-old American man is under arrest charged with planning a fire bomb attack on the U.S. Embassy in Israel and threatening the lives of President Trump
Starting point is 00:01:20 and other Americans on social media. Israel deported Joseph Neumeyer from Colorado yesterday and he appeared in a Brooklyn courtroom today. He's being held without bond. Prosecutors say the dual U.S.-German citizens started making disturbing posts on social media in late March. Meanwhile, dozens of Jewish organizations are calling on the federal government to do more to prevent anti-Semitic violence. And Pierce Jennifer Ludden reports, this comes after last week's killing of two Israeli embassy staffers in Washington, D.C. In a joint statement, the groups say tragedies like the one in D.C. are a direct result of rising levels of anti-Jewish incitement in city council meetings, schools and social
Starting point is 00:02:01 media. And they say it's not right that the institutions being targeted should bear the increasing cost of this threat. Eric Finger-Huthead's the Jewish Federation of America. It is the cost of the security guards and the off-duty police, all of whom we need more of. We have to protect our perimeters. We have to have more events covered, more hours covered. The groups say they'll push for more federal funding to local police and the FBI and for a crackdown on anti-semitic hate in online platforms. Jennifer Ludden, NPR News, Washington. A section of the Pacific Coast Highway that's been closed to the public since the January Palisades fire has reopened. NPR's Liz Baker has more.
Starting point is 00:02:42 At the Malibu Country Mart, General Manager Stephen McNellis watches a parking lot start to fill up with holiday weekend shoppers. More than he's seen since January. It was pretty devastating. It's just been kind of a ghost town. Now that PCH has reopened, he thinks there's a chance this weekend will help businesses get somewhat back to normal. But Frank Millerin, working in a fashion sneaker store, says he's not convinced.
Starting point is 00:03:03 A lot of that traffic is going to be people just taking in the terrible devastation, and it's going to be like a parking lot probably for a little bit. Starting point is 00:03:36 Translated by the Vatican News Service, Pope Leo can be heard saying, Today, I can say in a special way that I am a Roman with and for you. The Bishop of Rome is one of many titles given to the Pope. What will his duties include? Not a whole lot. I don't think he will be particularly involved in the day-to-day governing or administrative responsibility. That's Margaret Susan Thompson, a professor of history at Syracuse University.
Starting point is 00:04:05 She says his declaration speaks more to his responsibility to the people of Rome. It's an important symbolic statement and pastoral statement if not governing statement. Thompson says day-to-day duties are usually delegated to an auxiliary or assistant bishop known as a vicar. Claire Marie Schneider, NPR News. At the weekend box office, Disney's Lilo and Stitch took the top spot this holiday weekend with an estimated $145 million in ticket sales, making it the second biggest opening of the year after a Minecraft movie. Lilo and Stitch is a faithful remake of the 2002 original
Starting point is 00:04:43 story of a six-legged alien and a Hawaiian girl that has created a big cult following in the decades since.
