We've all been there running around a city looking for a bathroom but unable to find
A very simple free market solution is that we could just pay to use a bathroom
But we can't on the planet money podcast the story of how we once had thousands of pay toilets
And why they got banned from planet money on NPR wherever you get your podcasts
Live from NPR news in Washington, I'm Giles
Snyder. President Trump says he's hiking the tariff on foreign steal. NPR's Franco
Ordonez reports on the announcement Trump made during an appearance at a steel plant
near Pittsburgh.
Franco Ordonez He walked onto the stage to his campaign
music and he delivered a very political speech.
I mean, he tacked Biden, he touted how much he loves tariffs, and it was actually when
he was talking about his tariff agenda when he stopped to say that he had another big
announcement to deliver.
And he told the crowd that he's doubling tariffs on foreign steel imports.

Trump said he plans to push the steel tariff to 50 percent, and he later posted on social
media that the increased tariff would also apply to aluminum imports.
Trump was in Pennsylvania to talk up an agreement between Japan's Nippon Steel and U.S. Steel
that he said would help keep jobs in the U.S.
Severe weather delayed.
President Trump's return to the White House last night.
Weather kept Air Force One circling for an hour.
Earlier in the day, another fatal tornado hit Kentucky, killing one person and injuring
several others.
From Member Station WEKU, John McGarry has more.
The National Weather Service in Louisville says the twister had maximum winds of at least
115 miles per hour.
Washington County Judge Executive Timothy Graves says the area the tornado struck is
rural and very lightly populated.
That's why there's no siren out there.
And we had two homes that were just completely destroyed, blown away.
And there's other buildings and houses that have damage, but not the severity of the two
that were hit dead center, if you will.
Graves says first responders from several area counties came to help. Two weeks ago another tornado killed 19 people in
Laurel and Pulaski counties. For NPR News, I'm John McGarry. The National Weather
Service says a crew surveying this latest damage in Kentucky found at least
EF1 damage. Officials say up to three homes were destroyed and downed trees
temporarily blocked roads.
President Trump has announced on social media that he's removing the director of the Smithsonian's
National Portrait Gallery. Kim Sayed was the first woman to hold the position, as NPR's
Elizabeth Blair reports.
President Trump says he's firing Sayed from her post because he claims she is highly partisan
and a strong supporter of DEI, which he says is totally
inappropriate for her position. 62% of the Smithsonian's budget comes from the federal
government. In one of his executive orders, Trump claimed it had come under the influence
of a divisive, race-centered ideology. Before joining the Smithsonian's National Portrait
Gallery in 2013, Sayed held leadership positions for
the Historical Society of Pennsylvania and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Trump
has upended cultural institutions, including the Kennedy Center, since taking office four
months ago. He recently dismissed the Librarian of Congress, Carla Hayden. Elizabeth Blair,

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is warning about China, telling those gathered for this
weekend's annual defense summit in Singapore that China is intimidating its neighbors and
threatening Taiwan.
He called on Indo-Pacific allies to ramp up defense spending.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has removed
the routine recommendation for kids to get COVID vaccines. The change contradicts advice
from medical experts, as NPR's Ping Huang reports.
The CDC vaccine schedule now reflects a directive announced Tuesday by Health Secretary Robert
F. Kennedy Jr. Previously, the CDC recommended that everyone six months and older get annual COVID vaccines.
Now, the vaccine schedule recommends COVID vaccines for kids through shared clinical
decision-making that if a doctor and patient decide to gather, that it makes sense.
And there's no recommendation for pregnant women to get COVID vaccines.
The changes contradict the advice of professional medical groups who continue to recommend COVID
vaccines to children and pregnant women based on scientific evidence that shows they are
safe and effective.
Public health experts are alarmed by how the changes were made.
The closed-door process upends the public discussions and votes that have been a staple
of the process for decades.
Ping Huang, NPR News.
Beasel's cases around the U.S. were up slightly this week. Federal health officials say there are now 1,088 confirmed cases, up 42 from the last
week.
Texas added at least nine cases, Texas grappling with the nation's largest outbreak, but there
are others.
Officials say Colorado has now joined at least seven other states with active outbreaks.
