Starting point is 00:00:34 Another 175 people were wounded. The supplies were being offered by an Israeli-backed foundation. A number of witnesses say Israeli troops fired on crowds gathered near the distribution sites. Israel's military says it was firing warning shots. The White House says it's polling its nomination for NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman and Peres Franco Ordonez reports. The White House did not explain why Isaacman's nomination was polled, but spokesperson Liz Huston said in a statement that, quote, it's essential that the next leader of NASA is

Isaac Min, a pilot who flies his own fighter jet, has a close relationship with the billionaire Elon Musk, who this week left his post as a senior advisor to the president. The Senate was set to vote on Isaac Min's nomination next week. Huston said the president will name a replacement soon. She said the new administrator will quote, help lead humanity into space

Canadian firefighters are trying to control wildfires burning across that country's Northwestern region. 17,000 people have been forced from their homes in remote communities in the provinces of Manitoba and Saskatchewan. And the premier of Manitoba, Wab Kanu, says the hot dry weather that's helping to drive the fires is expected to continue. The climate is clearly changing. Just for our
Starting point is 00:02:01 provinces history, typically we'd have wildfires in one region, say east, west, north. This year it's in every region and at the same time. So going forward, we're going to have to scale up our wildfire fighting efforts as well as talking about mitigation. Smoke from the fires meanwhile has triggered air quality alerts as far away as Chicago. As the spring tornado season continues in the U.S., meteorologists are using new technology to confirm and classify tornadoes. Karen Zahr with Member Station WUKY reports on work being done
Starting point is 00:02:33 following the latest tornado that hit Kentucky on Friday. Officials with the National Weather Service use high tech equipment like drones grabbing aerial views and phone apps that estimate wind speed based on damage. Lead forecaster Brian Schottmer and his team also surveyed damage on the ground. At their first stop Schottmer said an EF1 tornado touched down. It looks like the debris from this particular structure was thrown to the north of the path and since the storm was moving east or northeast that indicates to me that it was thrown almost counterclockwise." After stopping at another site where a home had been ripped off its foundation, they upgraded
Starting point is 00:03:12 the tornado to an EF2 with wind speeds reaching 125 miles per hour. For NPR News, I'm Karen Zarr in Springfield, Kentucky. And this is NPR News. There's some uncertainty this weekend over whether diplomats from Ukraine will attend a new round of peace talks with Russia. Russia had proposed the talks for June in Istanbul. Russian forces, meanwhile, are continuing to attack Ukraine. A drone and missile strike this weekend has killed at least two people, including a nine year old girl. Paris is going wild about its soccer team
Starting point is 00:03:45 and has it wishes won its first ever Champions League Cup. It's the top soccer tournament in Europe as then Paris Eleanor Beardsley reports. PSG beat Inter Milan by a score of 5-0. Paris exploded in joy as its team PSG Paris Saint-Germain won the European Championship for the first time, beating Inter Milan at the final match played in Munich. Parisians chanted and shot off fireworks late into the night with tens of thousands celebrating on the Avenue Champs-Élysées. Many had the name Desiré Douay on their lips. Douay is the 19 year old new star of Paris Saint-Germain who scored
Starting point is 00:04:27 two goals and assisted another. The 5-0 victory was record breaking. The Qatari-owned PSG is only the second French club to win European football's top trophy since Marseille won in 1993. Eleanor Beardsley, NPR News, Paris. Maya Stark shot a 270 on Saturday to take a one-stroke lead heading into the final round of the US Women's Golf Open in Wisconsin. The 25-year-old from Sweden has a 7-under-209 total. Julia Lopez of Spain is in second after shooting a 68.
