As NPR's daily economics podcast, The Indicator has been asking businesses how tariffs are
affecting their bottom line.
I paid 800,000 today.
You paid $800,000 in tariffs today.
Yes.
Wow.
And what that means for your bottom line.

Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Janene Hurst. The Senate returns from its Memorial Day recess
tomorrow and President Trump's big tax cutting bill is topping their to-do list. The House passed
the bill with just barely though by one vote. Trump is demanding his party get in line and
pass this, but some Senate Republicans say it can't pass their chamber
in its current form.
And Pierce Tamer Keith has more.
The big questions are how hard it will be for Senate Republicans to pass this and how
many changes they'll make to the House version.
There's a lot of pressure on Senate Republicans because this basically contains Trump's entire
domestic agenda, all in one bill, tax cuts, immigration spending,
cuts to Medicaid and other programs.
And here's Tamara Keith reporting. Democrats are keying in on cuts to Medicaid, which provides
health care to lower income Americans and food assistance. Some Republicans are alarmed
by how much it's projected to add to the national deficit. The Department of Homeland Security
has released a list of local governments it says aren't cooperating with immigration enforcement
in preparation for cutting funds to them. VPM News' Chad Khalil reports that Virginia
Republicans are questioning that distinction.
Chad Khalil 33 local Virginia governments are on the list, including in conservative
places. Hanover County
officials in central Virginia said they didn't know why they made the list and federal partners
didn't explain. Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin said he asked local governments to respond.
I think we'll see a bunch of them to say no we don't belong on this list and they will clarify
that they are not sanctuary cities and I think the ones that don't do that, we should collectively really ask, why not?
One city, Martinsville, was listed as a county on the DHS list. The city's police department
pointed that out in their statement. For NPR News, I'm Jad Kalil, in Richmond.
Ukrainian drones hit deep into Russia today, hitting several airfields and destroying more
than 40 military planes. And Russia struck a Ukrainian military training unit, leaving at least 12 soldiers dead. This ahead of scheduled peace talks in
Istanbul tomorrow. Meanwhile at least seven people are dead, 71 injured after a
bridge collapsed in Russia derailing a passenger train passing below.
And Piers Charles-Mains has more. The first bridge collapsed as a packed
passenger train was passing underneath in Russia's Bryansk region overnight
causing debris and several trucks to fall onto the train carriages below.
Images shared on social media showed stunned passengers trying to climb out of the wreckage
in the dark.
Meanwhile, a separate rail bridge collapsed in the neighboring Kursk region several hours
later derailing a freight train and injuring the driver.
Russia's investigative committee said it was investigating both incidents as potential acts of terrorism and several prominent Russian politicians were quick to blame Ukraine.
The incidents come ahead of plans for peace talks between Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul Monday.

In Boulder, Colorado, the FBI and police are investigating what authorities are calling an attack on a mall.
There are reported injuries.
A ceremony in New Orleans this weekend honored 19 black Americans whose skulls were shipped to Germany in the late 1800s for racial research.
The remains were recently repatriated and laid to rest in the city where they had died.
The ceremony featured multi-faith prayers, an African drum and dance procession, and
a jazz band.
A pop star from the 1960s has gone viral.
And Piersnetta Ulubi reports on a Connie Francis song that was recorded more than six decades
ago that recently hit the top of the TikTok music charts.
The song was not even a hit back in 1961, but its fan club now includes the likes of
Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner.
Those celebrities are among the more than 600,000 people who've posted TikToks featuring
the song. Connie Francis told People magazine she did not even remember recording it.
The 87-year-old singer just set up her own TikTok account
to ride the wave of her social media renaissance.
It's just one more career milestone for Francis,
the first woman to top the Billboard Hot 100
and who sold more than 40 million records
before she turned 25.
