Starting point is 00:00:00 Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Rylan Barton. Democrat Javier Bacera has advanced to the general election for California governor. As according to a race call from the Associated Press, Bacera has more than 35 years in public office, including a state attorney general and U.S. Health Secretary. He was once an afterthought in the race, but surged in the final months. Congressman Eric Swalwell dropped out of the race and resigned. In the general election, Bacera will face the second highest vote getter in the race. Former Fox News commentator Steve Hilton is currently in the second position. After infighting and delays, the Senate passed a bill to fund ICE and border patrol into the end of President Trump's term.
Starting point is 00:00:40 This could have been easy for Republicans, but it turned into a protracted fight after some Senate Republicans balked at Trump's fund for his allies who say they have been persecuted by what he calls a weaponized government. NPR's Sam Greenglass explains. There's always been this small camp of Republicans willing to criticize the president. What I think this blowup did is reveal maybe more widespread frustrations below the surface. And it also tested how far those frustrated members are actually willing to go to push back. These tensions were already simmering as Trump started endorsing primary opponents to incumbent members of his own party this spring. But the thought of taxpayers possibly compensating January 6 rioters may have been a breaking point for a broader swath of lawmakers who lived through that day. NPR's Sam Greenglass reporting. Two days into a U.S. brokered ceasefire, Israel is expanding its target zone in Lebanon.
Starting point is 00:01:37 The Israeli military issued new warnings today to villages in southern Lebanon. NPR's Jane Arraf reports from Beirut. Residents were told to leave. The Israeli military issued urgent warnings to eight villages in southern Lebanon, telling residents to evacuate their homes ahead of potential airstrikes. They included two villages, which had not previously received evacuated. warnings in this war. Lebanon's state news agency said the Israeli military struck one of the villages shortly after. Video posted on social media showed roads jammed with people leaving one of the biggest villages in the Saidan district after the warnings. The ceasefire reached in Washington Wednesday, called on Iran-backed Hezbollah to stop fighting while allowing Israel to continue attacks and remain in South Lebanon. Starting point is 00:02:30 U.S. employers added a surprising 172,000 jobs in May as the labor market continue to show resilience in the face of rising costs from the Iran War. The unemployment rate last month stayed at a low 4.3%. The job market has been recovering this year from a miserable 2025 so far shrugging off higher energy prices and increased economic uncertainty since the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran. in late February. A magistrate judge has ordered pre-trial detention for a former senior CIA official accused of stashing over $40 million worth of gold bars from the federal government in the basement of his Virginia home. The judge ruled that David Rush has the means and motive to flee while the case is pending. Rush is charged with fraudulently claiming tens of thousands of dollars in compensation for military leave.
Starting point is 00:03:24 His attorney accused prosecutors of smearing him with sensational allegations. The hardest tissue in the body is tooth an animal. NPR's Nate Roth reports a new study looks at how it's evolved to change with human diets. Enamel is the pearly white outermost layer of teeth. It's founded many vertebrate species. And unlike bones, it can't repair itself. So it needs to be especially durable. The new study published in the journal Nature looks at the structure of enamel on the nanoscale, very close up.
Starting point is 00:03:53 Puppa Gilbert, the lead author, is a physicist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Well, you see is that there are very parallel crystals. It are parallel like stray hair in a ponytail, if you wish. But they found in species such as meat-eating early humans that ate harder or tougher foods, those parallel crystals were slightly askew. A tiny adaptation, the study finds, it helps fractures and enamel stay small. Nate Rot, NPR News.
