Hey, it's Sarah Gonzalez. The economy has been in the news a lot lately. It's kind of always in
the news and Planet Money is always here to explain it. Each episode we tell a sometimes quirky,
sometimes surprising, always interesting story that helps you better understand the economy.
So when you hear something about cryptocurrency or where exactly your taxes go, yes, I was.
Listen to the Planet Money podcast from NPR.
ago, yes I was. Listen to the Planet Money podcast from NPR. Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Louise Schiavone. In Southern California, for a second
straight day, there are major actions by federal law enforcement going after people in the
country illegally. Steve Funderman has more.
Agents moved in at another Home Depot. Some of their focus was on day laborers who often
gather outside
the store looking for work. As word spread on social media of the raid, protesters showed
up. There were some confrontations. Objects were thrown at a U.S. Marshal's bus carrying
some of those detained. Agents responded with flashbangs and tear gas. One of the protesters,
Maya Malika, blames President Trump. What we're facing right now is Trump's armed Gestapo because this is the future.
We're just seeing a glimpse of the future that Trump wants to implement.
The acting director of ICE, Todd Lyons, is defending the actions here, claiming that
some of the people arrested included dangerous criminals.
For NPR News, I'm Steve Futterman in Paramount, California.
President Trump today told NBC News that he is not prepared to talk to his former ally,
Elon Musk, and assumes that their relationship is over. NPR's Stephen Fowler tells us the online
feud between the two men this week could have real-world implications for not only Musk's
business empire, but
also for government and for Republican political operations.
In the middle of that social media spat on Thursday, Trump threatened to end Musk's
contracts.
Musk threatened to decommission the Dragon Capsule, but either one of those actions would
seriously cripple both Musk's companies and the federal government.
I mean, the government subsidy piece is a big part of Musk's wealth that in turn allowed him to buy social media site
X and donate about a quarter billion dollars to help send Trump to the Oval Office last
year.
NPR's Stephen Fowler. About a thousand people are being forced from their homes by spreading
wildfires in the Canadian province of Manitoba,
which is already under a state of emergency. As Dan Karpanchuk reports, in all, some 19,000
people have been displaced over the past couple of weeks. The latest community to be impacted,
Snow Lake, more than 400 miles north of Winnipeg. The town was ordered evacuated late Friday as a
large wildfire is threatening the area. About 6000 people in
nearby Flintlawn and the surrounding area have already been forced to leave. Ottawa has put the
call out to its international partners for firefighting help, as Canada's own resources
have been stretched to the limit. Meanwhile, smoke from the wildfires in western Canada is causing
hazy skies across North America. Toronto and Montreal are recording some of the poorest air quality in the world due to wildfire smoke. For NPR News, I'm Dan
Karpenchuk in Toronto. American tennis star Coco Goff has defeated the world's
top-ranked women's player Arena Sabalenka to win the women's French Open.
This is Goff's second career Grand Slam title. This is NPR News in Washington.
Hundreds of mayors from coastal cities across the world gathered in Nice, France today ahead
of a UN Ocean Summit.
NPR's Elner Beardsley reports on widespread concerns about rising seas.
The mayor of Nice brought the world's coastal mayors together to put pressure on heads of
state and policymakers that will attend the summit.
The mayors hailed from developing and developed nations from Africa and the Pacific to the
fjord city of Bergen, Norway.
Things are changing and at a rapid pace.
New Orleans Mayor Latoya Cantrell was there.
To adapt we have to learn from one another, meaning other cities, push for stronger collaboration
and partnerships that we need to even demonstrate to the people of the United States that this
is real.
It's not clear if the Trump administration will send someone to represent the U.S. at
the summit.
