President Trump is deploying 2,000 members of the National Guard as protests over ICE
raids escalated in the Los Angeles area.
NPR's Deepa Sivaram reports.
On Friday, ICE started conducting immigration raids in Los Angeles, and that resulted in
contentious protests
and rallies over the weekend.
President Trump was critical of LA Mayor Karen Bass
and California Governor Gavin Newsom.
He posted on his social media platform on Saturday,
saying that if Bass and Newsom didn't do their jobs,
then the federal government would step in.
And then Trump called in 2000 members
of the California National Guard going against Newsom,
who said the move would only escalate tensions.
White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt said in a statement late Saturday night that
Trump deployed the National Guard to, quote, address the lawlessness that has been allowed
to fester and called California's Democratic leaders, quote, feckless.

Ukraine says Russia continued an aerial assault on the northeastern Ukrainian region of Kharkiv
for a second night, hitting residential areas and killing at least one civilian.

Health officials in Gaza say at least six Palestinians were killed today while trying
to reach food distribution sites backed by Israel and the U.S. The Israeli military says
its troops had fired warning shots as suspects were approaching the troops. Gaza health officials
say more than 100 have people have been killed trying to access food in the past two weeks.
In Colombia, a potential presidential candidate is in critical condition after being
shot during a campaign rally, Manuel Ruta reports from Bogota.
Senator Miguel Uribe was speaking to a group of about 50 people when shots ran out and
sparked panic. Videos posted on social media show the politician bleeding next to a car
before he was rushed to a nearby hospital.
His condition is still delicate.
The 39-year-old senator is one of the most prominent voices in Colombia's opposition
and has expressed his interest in running a next year's presidential election.
