Noor Rahm Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Noor Rahm. About 300 National Guard troops arrived in Los Angeles this morning, the first of 2,000 troops mobilized by President Trump. He acted after two days of protests against raids by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. More protests are expected today.
Starting point is 00:00:45 Steve Futterman is standing by in downtown Los Angeles. In front of me right now are members of the National Guard. These are some of the first troops deployed here in Southern California. Maybe around two dozen members of the Guard here. They are all armed. They are all in riot gear. They are standing in front of one of the downtown federal buildings. Now this is a complex which includes many buildings, including the downtown courthouse, including the Metropolitan Detention Center.
Starting point is 00:01:14 And last night, this is where some of the most violent confrontations took place. There's graffiti almost on every building, at least the lower sections of these buildings, criticizing, attacking President Trump, attacking ICE. Right now the situation is calm. We will see if that lasts throughout the day. Steve Futterman reporting from Los Angeles. There's been another incident at an aid distribution site operated by a group backed by the U.S.
Starting point is 00:01:41 Health workers in Gaza say at least six more Palestinians have been killed and many others wounded by Israeli fire as they were heading to an aid center operated by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation. The Israeli military said troops directed warning shots at a group that was moving toward them and was deemed a threat. The BBC's Sebastian Usher reports. The latest incident occurred before dawn near an aid distribution site in Rafah in the south of Gaza. Palestinian paramedics said they'd evacuated four people who were killed, as many were once again gathering in the hope that they might be able to pick up food when
Starting point is 00:02:16 and if the sites opened. One woman said that her husband was shot in the head as he was waiting to collect food for their family. The Israeli military has acknowledged reports of injuries but did not give any information on how many people it believed had been injured. The BBC's Sebastian Usher reporting from Jerusalem. Gaza's health officials say dozens of Palestinians have been killed near the distribution sites over the past two weeks. In Colombia, a potential presidential candidate is in critical condition after being shot during a campaign rally yesterday. Manuel Ruta reports from Bogota.
Starting point is 00:02:52 Senator Miguel Uribe was speaking to a group of about 50 people when shots ran out and sparked panic. Videos posted on social media show the politician bleeding next to a car before he was rushed to a nearby hospital. His condition is still delicate. The 39-year-old senator is one of the most prominent voices in Colombia's opposition and has expressed his interest in running in next year's presidential election. For NPR News, I'm Manuel Rueda.
