Live from NPR News in New York City, I'm Dua-Halees Ikaotow.
In Minnesota, local law enforcement and the FBI are searching for a suspect who posed
as a police officer and killed a top Democratic lawmaker and her husband at their home.
In what appears to be a related attack, another lawmaker, a state senator, and his wife were
also shot but survived.
The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension Superintendent Drew Evans issued a plea and this warning.
At this time we would ask the public if you do locate him, to see him, to call 911.
Do not approach him. You should consider him armed and dangerous.
And you should call 911 immediately with the information.
Earlier, Governor Tim Walz said in a statement, Melissa Hortman was a great leader who woke
up every day determined to make the state a better place.
Minnesota's thoughts are with her loved ones.
He also added, prayers are also with Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette, who are
shot and wounded and are being treated.
President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin
discussed the escalating situation in the Middle East
and the war in Ukraine in a call today.
And Piers Franco-Ordonez reports,
the two leaders spoke for about an hour.
President Trump says Putin called him to, quote,
very nicely wish him a happy birthday,
but also to talk about Iran.
Trump said the two spoke
at length about the conflict and both agree that this quote war in Israel
should end soon. Trump says they spent less time discussing the war in Ukraine
but confirmed that Putin plans to move forward with an arranged prisoner swap
with Ukraine. Trump said there will be more discussions about the war in Ukraine
next week. It was not clear what he was referring to, though Trump is attending
the G7 summit in Canada where Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will meet
with leaders. Franco, Ordonez, NPR News. People gathered for pro-democracy
protests across the country today. From member station WUNC, Rusty Jacobs reports on the so-called No Kings Gathering in Durham,
North Carolina.
Donald Trump has got to go.
Thousands packed at downtown square for Durham's rally.
Protesters held signs that said, I smell fascism and save our democracy.
They expressed concerns over President Donald Trump's use of the military to quell protests in Los Angeles, deep funding cuts to scientific research and attacks on
universities. Melissa Cortez is a naturalized citizen whose parents came from Mexico.
My parents came here for a better life, for more freedom, and I hope it stays that way.
Cortez said coming out to protest is essential to protecting democracy it stays that way. A major soccer tournament is kicking off today across the US, the FIFA Club World Cup.
It will feature men's clubs, teams from around the
world competing for the chance to be crowned champion and Piers Rafael Nam has more.
It's not new. The Club World Cup has been around for a while, but it was low-key and pretty small.
This year though, it's been turbocharged. 32 teams will now be playing in games from Charlotte to LA, including top
teams like Real Madrid, and also less known teams like Ulsan from South Korea. Yet somehow
fans don't seem that excited. Ticket sales have been really slow. Fans have tons of options
when it comes to soccer already. Will they tune in to watch the Club World Cup? That's
the key question as the
opening game kicks off tonight in Miami with the final next month in New Jersey.

India's aviation ministry says it has recovered the flight data recorder from Thursday's Air
India crash. They say the plane began its fall at 650 feet, crashing into a medical
school. The cause is still under
investigation with US and British teams assisting. Crews are still working at the crash site.
The death toll stands at 270. I'm Dwahili Saikautal, NPR News in New York.
