Starting point is 00:00:41 economies. Trump spoke yesterday at a military parade that saw U.S. troops, tanks, and planes take over the streets and skies of Washington. Trump said, Time and again, America's enemies have learned that if you threaten the American people, our soldiers are coming for you, your defeat will be certain, your demise will be final, and your downfall will be total and complete. Also yesterday, more than five million protesters participated in more than 2,000 No Kings demonstrations across the U.S., according to organizers. That includes people protesting in Eugene,
Starting point is 00:01:19 Oregon. Brian Bull of member station KLCC has this report. Thousands of people swarmed around the federal courthouse before taking to the streets. Signs denounced Trump's crackdown on immigrants and the onslaught of executive orders. M.B. Barlow of Eugene showed up in a rainbow wig and red nose. She said Trump and his cabinet are no laughing matter. Toss out the clowns. These clowns aren't funny. No grounding in any principles except self-aggrandizement and it's corrosive to our system. Meanwhile, President Trump told reporters ahead of the weekend that he didn't see himself as a king and had to, quote, go through hell to get stuff approved.

A manhunt in Minnesota goes on as authorities say the suspect in what's being called a political assassination yesterday should be considered armed and dangerous. In Georgia, Senator Raphael Warnock says, now is the time to try to heal the nation's differences. The lawmaker, who is also a Baptist pastor, spoke last night at the Wisconsin Democratic
Starting point is 00:02:29 Party State Convention. Chuck Quirmbach of member station WUWM has this report. Chuck Quirmbach, WUWM Member, WUWM Senator Warnock said his heart goes out to the people of Minnesota following the shootings of two state lawmakers and their spouses. Warnock also lamented the forcible removal Thursday of California Democratic Senator Alex Padilla from a Department of Homeland Security news conference. But Warnock says U.S. residents should not be at war with one another. At the end of the day, we're all we've got Democrats, independents and Republicans, red, yellow, brown,
Starting point is 00:03:07 black and white, urban and rural, liberal and conservative, male and female. Warnock says if people want to fight, they ought to fight for the U.S. For NPR News, I'm Chuck Quirmbach in Wisconsin-Dells, Wisconsin. This is NPR News. Wildfire risk is rising across the West. Colorado Public Radio's Ishan Takor reports that's affecting how homeowners prepare. When the Marshall Fire tore through Lewisville, Colorado in 2021,
Starting point is 00:03:39 it destroyed entire neighborhoods. Afterwards, neighbors Anne Brennan and Lisa Hughes rebuilt their homes to be more fire resistant. It's called home hardening. They installed fine metal mesh over vents to block embers. And they cleared anything flammable, like mulch and trees from near their homes. Fire expert Kimiko Barrett is with the research group Headwaters Economics. She says many of these changes are within reach. We do know that many of the most effective home hardening risk reduction strategies are also the most affordable.
Starting point is 00:04:12 Brennan and Hughes worked with their neighbors. Now, their community has a three-year action plan to prepare for future fires. For NPR News, I'm Eshaan Thakor in Lewisville, Colorado. Tropical storm Delilah is moving away from the southwestern coast of Mexico, but its outer bands are still bringing strong winds, rain, and the risk of flooding and mudslides. And in Fairbanks, Alaska, temperatures nearing 90 have spurred the National Weather Service to issue a rare heat advisory. That goes into effect later today and lasts into Tuesday evening.
