Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Dan Ronen.
President Trump says a deal between the United States and Iran has been reached.
NPR's Michael Levitt reports.
Ships of the world, start your engines.
Let the oil flow, Trump wrote in the Truth Social Post announcing the deal,
stating that the U.S. and Iran have agreed to open the Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian state media have also reported on the deal,
signaling that Tehran is on board.
The Prime Minister of Pakistan, which had been mediating the talks,
also confirmed the deal on social media, stating that both sides have agreed to immediately
halt hostilities on all fronts, including in Lebanon. He also stated that a signing ceremony
is expected to take place on June 19th in Switzerland. Michael Levitt and PR News, Washington.
Within the last hour, President Trump left Washington, D.C. for the G7 summit in France.
There, the leaders of the industrial democracies are expected to discuss the U.S.-Israeli
war against Iran and the resulting higher energy prices and inflation its cause.
Josh Lipsky is the chair of the International Economics Department at the Atlantic Council and
worked in the Obama administration.
Price pressures, gas, energy, this then drives growth down.
And so this is the number one thing they want to try to resolve at this meeting going
forward.
It's a less optimistic global economy than they expected, although still resilient thanks to
AI and some other drivers.
So it's a mixed picture.
While not officially members of the G7, leaders from India, Brazil, South Korea, and Kenya are expected to participate in some of the sessions.
The European Union will formally start the ascension process for Ukraine and Moldova Monday.
Terry Schultz tells us the two nations, the process has been sped up due to Russia's war against Ukraine.
European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen say the beginning of negotiations on EU membership.
for Ukraine and Moldova indicates, quote, recognition of the determination, courage, and hard work
shown by both countries in advancing reforms, even in the face of immense challenges.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said his country has done everything necessary to get to
this stage and that he expects the process to move quickly. That will still take several years
at a minimum. The decision by all EU governments to move ahead came after former Hungarian Prime
Minister Viktor Orban, who opposed Ukrainian membership, was voted out of office in April.

The price of crude oil fell on the futures markets Monday after President Trump announced the agreement concerning Iran.
Oil dropped by 4 percent.
The benchmark Brent Crude has gone below $84 a barrel.
Former Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell is hospitalized,
according to a statement from his office, which says he's receiving excellent care,
but there's little other information available about the condition of the 84-year-old Kentucky Republican.

The number of screw worm cases continues to rise, according to the Department of Agriculture.
There are now 12 confirmed infestations, 11 in Texas, one in New Mexico.
Texas Public Radio's David Martin Davies has more.
The latest confirmed case of the New World screw worm is in a sheep in Sutton County,
135 miles northwest of San Antonio.
The tracking of the flesh-eating parasite shows it has moved beyond.
the Texas Mexico border zone and into the Texas Hill country, the screw worm is a parasitic fly
that attacks cattle, sheep, goats, wildlife, pets, and rarely people. A screw worm fly lays hundreds
of eggs in an open wound or body opening such as a nose in a living, warm-blooded animal.
The rapid infestation can be deadly. Livestock owners are being urged to inspect animals
regularly and immediately report a suspected infestation to a veterinarian,
screw worm poses a potentially devastating threat to the cattle industry.

Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board and the FAA
are expected at the scene of an airplane crash in Butler, Missouri, where 12 people died Sunday.
After a skydiving plane crashed, witnesses say the single-engine turbop had taken off and was
trying to gain altitude when it tried to return and land on a highway and crashed about 60
miles south of Kansas City. Before the midday crashed, the plane had conducted two short flights.
Eleven people on the plane were skydivers. The 12th victim was a pilot of the aircraft.
