Starting point is 00:00:00 Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Kristen Wright. The ceasefire between Israel and Iran appears to be holding as NATO leaders wrap up their summit in the Netherlands. At a press conference today, President Trump maintained U.S. bombings of three nuclear sites in Iran set back Iran's enrichment program decades. This contradicts the finding of an early U.S. intelligence assessment Trump is citing in Israeli review of the damage. The Atomic Energy Commission of Israel,
Starting point is 00:00:31 and I just wondered, this is an official letter, and they're very serious people, as you know. The devastating U.S. strike on Fordow destroyed the site's critical infrastructure and rendered the enrichment facility totally inoperable. It was devastated. Trump says he and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky had a good meeting at the summit. Democratic socialist Zoran Mamdani is poised to become the Democratic Party's nominee for mayor of New York City. NPR's Stephen Fowler has more on what the primary outcome does and doesn't mean for the National Party.
Starting point is 00:01:07 At a time when the Democratic brand is facing deep unpopularity with voters, Mamdani's success is notable. Tom Jensen of Democratic-aligned firm Public Policy Polling said a big part of that came from increased turnout and support from voters under 45. What we really just found the key was, was he was engaging young people in a level that's extremely unusual for something like a primary election for mayor. After losing the White House, the Senate and failing to retake the House, the Democrats are searching for good signs

The chairman of a vaccine advisory committee for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says it will re-examine the number of vaccines kids get. As NPR's Ping Huang reports, the move represents a possible significant shift in vaccine policy. The CDC's Influential Vaccine Advisory Committee met today with all new members and a new tone was immediately evident.
Starting point is 00:02:01 Martin Kuhldorf, a biostatistician and the chair of the group, says they're considering major changes to the vaccine schedule for kids. The number of vaccines that our children and adolescents receive today exceeds what children in most other developed nations receive. The committee's recommendations are critical in guiding state and local vaccine policies, along with what insurers cover. Two weeks ago, Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. purged the committee and replaced it with new members. Some of them have expressed skepticism about vaccines.
Starting point is 00:02:31 Ping Huang, NPR News, Atlanta. Zena Manor leader Chuck Schumer was taken to the hospital for dehydration today. A spokesperson says he was released and is back at work at the Capitol. The high temperature in Washington today is 98 degrees. Extreme heat warnings and advisories are in effect across the mid-Atlantic, Central U.S. and the South, weather forecasters say it'll last a bit longer.

Stephen Thompson, NPR News. A researcher in Switzerland says his team is finding a new occurrence in the country's glaciers, holes emerging from inside of them, sort of like Swiss cheese. The scientist believes the holes are caused by turbulence from water passing through the bottom of the glaciers or from airflow through the holes.
Starting point is 00:04:11 Switzerland's glaciers are melting from the planet warming. A SpaceX capsule is on its way to the International Space Station. It launched from Florida early today.
