Starting point is 00:00:00 Live from NPR news in Washington, I'm Dan Roran. Funeral services for Iran's supreme leader continued today in Tehran. NPR's Hadil al-Shaashi reports he and four members of his family were killed by the U.S. Israelia strikes four months ago. Tens of thousands of Iranians lined up to perform the ritual Islamic funeral prayers facing the caskets of Ayatollah Ali Khomeini and his four family members. Iranian state media showed Iranian military, and political officials sobbing as they perform the prayers.
Starting point is 00:00:36 Water sprayed over the mourners to keep them cool as the temperatures reached the 90s. Three of Chaminé's sons were seen at the prayers. Missing was his fourth son, Mushdaba Chaminé, who took over a supreme leader from his father. A funeral preparation spokesperson said the funeral was delayed until now because of the war. Chaminé will be buried in his birthplace of Mashhad on Thursday. Hedil Al-Shalchi and PR News, Istanbul. Starting point is 00:01:10 FIFA is listing the striking the striker's red card ban. NPR's Becky Sullivan reports. U.S. striker, Flaar and Baligan was shown the red card in last Wednesday's match against Bosnia-Herzegovina. The referee at first declined to call the foul of any kind, but a video official stepped in after reviewing the play in slow motion. Normally a red card would mean a suspension in the following game. In the phone call with Infantino, Trump wanted to understand why the red card was given and why a suspension was necessary, according to an official with knowledge of the call who was granted anonymity to discuss a private conversation. The news of the call, coupled with FIFA's decision to allow balligan to play,

The CDC has lacked a permanent director for most of the Trump administration, as NPR's Ping Wong reports recently released emails highlight the challenges the new administrator is going to face at CDC. Dr. Erica Schwartz, Trump's nominee for CDC director, is expected to have a confirmation hearing before the Senate Health Committee this month. Senator Bernie Sanders from Vermont is a ranking member. He recently released more than 250 pages of internal emails provided by Dr. Deb Howrie, a top CDC official who quit last August.
Starting point is 00:02:26 They show CDC career scientists pushing back against. changes to vaccine policies requested by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and his political appointees. Dr. Dmitri Descalakis, a former CDC official who quit with Howie, says he sought to document the conflicts of interest in anti-science moves he saw. And frankly, like, it becomes really clear that this is public health by vibes as opposed to public health by data. A potential competitor to the New York Stock Exchange in NASDAQ begins operations Monday. The Dallas-based Texas Stock Exchange will initiate a phased robot as the market eventually expands.

The massive heat wave collided with more than just the 4th of July celebrations in Pittsburgh. It was the 20th anniversary of Anthrocon, the annual convention for. the furry fandom. Jenna Post from Member Station WESA reports. The heat wave hardly slowed down the furries at Anthrocon, the largest furry fandom convention in the world, according to organizers.
Starting point is 00:03:42 Despite the heat index exceeding 100 degrees, many attendees still wore full fur suits. Organizers say weekend passes sold out early Friday for the first time in the convention's history. And visit Pittsburgh estimates nearly $18.6 million in visitor spending. Mayor Cory O'Connor says Anthrocon has become a Pittsburgh tradition. Fourth of July festivities, you know, we know that the furries are going to be a mix in Pittsburgh for that weekend. The weather ultimately led to the cancellation of the parade and block party, a tradition that draws furries and local families.
Starting point is 00:04:15 But it didn't stop a record-breaking 20th anniversary. For NPR News, I'm Jenna Post in Pittsburgh. Major League Baseball will have at least seven vacancies on its umpiring staff next year. But according to USA Today, seven long-time umpires, including four crew chiefs, plan to retire. It could mean Major League Baseball will hire its first female umpire Jen Powell next season. This is NPR News from Washington.
