Starting point is 00:00:01 Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Kristen Wright. Israel's prime minister is expected to meet with President Trump in Washington soon to discuss the memorandum of understanding, signed between the U.S. and Iran. Israel was not part of the preliminary plan to end the war and is concerned about the details in the deal. NPR's Kerry Kahn reports the 60-day ceasefire expires next month. Israel has been sidelined in the negotiations to end the war with Iran, a source familiar with the matter who will is not authorized to speak publicly about Netanyahu's plans, tells NPR the Israeli prime minister has been asking repeatedly for a face-to-face with Trump, and that Netanyahu wants to seek U.S. approval for potential Israeli military action against Iran if, quote, that becomes necessary.
Starting point is 00:00:49 Netanyahu, who faces tough elections this fall has been on the defensive about the U.S. Iran deal. It is very unpopular in Israel and perceived as making too many concessions to Iran, that includes unfreezing billions of dollars, which Israel says Iran could use to replenish its badly damaged missile arsenal. At the World Cup, the United States is back in action today in a round of 16 match against Belgium. As NPR's Russell Lewis reports, the American team will have a key striker in the lineup, after a much-talked about red card given in the last game.
Starting point is 00:01:28 U.S. forward Filaran Balagan tangled legs with the defender from Bosnia-Herzegovina stepping on his ankle. It was unintentional, he said. Still, he was shown the red card, which meant he was booted from the rest of that game and the one against Belgium. But after President Trump called FIFA's president about the incident, a FIFA disciplinary committee took the highly unusual step of suspending Baligan suspension for a year, making him eligible to play immediately. U.S. defender Chris Richards says it's good to have him back. We have confidence in every guy, regardless of who's going to step out there. But, you know, I think knowing that we have now full roster, maybe gives us a little bit of extra confidence. Starting point is 00:02:16 The man accused of killing conservative activist Charlie Kirk will appear in court this week in Utah for a crucial hearing. Prosecutors will argue Tyler Robinson, stand trial and get the death penalty. Robinson turned himself in after Kirk was shot in front of thousands of people while speaking at an event at Utah Valley University in September. He has not entered a plea. A jury will decide whether the case will move ahead to trial. President Trump will jointly ring the opening bell for the New York Stock Exchange and the NASDAQ from the Oval Office when the markets open this hour. He's promoting the first day of trading for Trump accounts, a new federal investment program for children.
