Starting point is 00:00:00 Giles Snyder Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Giles Snyder. President Trump says he's ordering two nuclear submarines to be moved toward Russia. NPR's Franco Ordonez reports on the move following threats from a top Russian official. Franco Ordonez President Trump announced he was taking cautionary steps because of quote, provocative statements from former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. Earlier this week, Medvedev warned Trump was playing an ultimatum game with Russia after Trump shortened a 50-day deadline to 10 days for Russia to agree to a ceasefire with Ukraine
Starting point is 00:00:36 or face new tariffs. Medvedev said each new ultimatum is a step toward war. Trump posted on social media that the submarines were being moved quote just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that. Starting point is 00:01:10 report is drawing concern from analysts like Natasha Sarin at the nonpartisan Yale Budget Lab, which provides economic analysis of federal policy proposals. Our government data is so incredibly valuable and also collected painstakingly by career civil servants who dedicate themselves to the task of trying to inform the public about the ways in which the economy is evolving. Trump fired the commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics hours after her agency said the nation added just 73,000 jobs last month. The weak jobs numbers and Trump's latest terror rollout led Wall Street to fall the most since May. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer says Trump is shooting the messenger.
Starting point is 00:01:54 There's been an outpouring of grief for a well-known Palestinian who was allegedly killed by an Israeli settler this week. MPR's Eleanor Beardsley says a settler who was detained by police has now been released. Representatives from European governments came to offer condolences after the shooting of Auda Hatalin, who helped make the Oscar-winning documentary No Other Land about the expropriation of Palestinian lands here by Israeli settlers. Through an interpreter, Hatine's brother Khalil speaks to the Europeans.

Tennessee's Building Commission voted unanimously to gift a no-rent lease of state-owned land for the project. State lawmakers who represent Nashville say they were blindsided and have serious concerns about potential risks for residents. Last year, an artificial intelligence company owned by Musk opened a supercomputer facility in Memphis, near a predominantly black neighborhood. That facility is powered by turbines that emit hazardous air pollutants and is the subject of a lawsuit. Richard Massey is a community organizer in Memphis.

Massey pointed out that a similar boring company project in Las Vegas has been plagued by permit issues and safety complaints. For NPR News, I'm Rose Gilbert in Nashville. Elon Musk SpaceX has delivered four new crew members to the International Space Station. The astronauts from the U.S., Russia and Japan arrived early this morning aboard a SpaceX capsule less than 15 hours after liftoff from Florida.
