You want to understand it better, but let's be honest, you don't want it to be your
entire life either.
Well, that's sort of like our show, here and now anytime.
Every weekday on our podcast, we talk to people all over the country about everything
from political analysis to climate resilience, video games.
We even talk about dumpster diving on this show.

The U.S. and India are locked in a standoff over tariffs. New Delhi is blasting President Trump's decision to double U.S. tariffs on Indian imports, calling the move unjustified and unreasonable. NPR's Danielle Kurtzleben reports.
Trump announced a 25 percent tariff on Indian goods last week as part of a set of global country-by-country tariffs that will take effect Friday.
This additional 25 percent is set to take effect in three weeks. Trump says the new tariff,
is in response to India purchasing Russian oil amid the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
The White House also said the new tariff is aimed at deterring other countries from buying
Russian oil. India has argued that its purchases of Russian oil have kept global prices low
and that the U.S. previously encouraged those purchases.
The U.S.'s major imports from India include pharmaceuticals, clothes, and stones and metals used in jewelry.

The man who shot and killed four people in Manhattan last week had multiple contacts,
with police in the last few years.
NPR's Martin Kosti reports, new details released by police in Las Vegas, show the man was
the subject of two calls for mental health crises.
The man's mother was on the phone with 911 at least twice in 2022 and again just last
August, saying her son was suicidal.
She said he had a concealed weapon permit known as a CCW.
This is a recording of dispatchers discussing the mother's call last year.
She wasn't sure if he's got any weapons in the house.
anymore from what she knows he got rid of it, the CCW. But after that incident, the man was able to
buy the rifle he later used in New York. In both incidents, police filed papers to commit him to
emergency mental health treatment, but there's no record they invoked Nevada's red flag law,
which could have restricted him from having guns for up to a year. Martin Costi and PR News.
The wildfires that devastated Los Angeles earlier this year were likely responsible for the
deaths of more than 400 people.
NPR's Alejandra Burunda reports that's far more than the official counts.
The wildfires ripped through parts of the city and doused the region in toxic smoke and
ash for weeks.
Andrew Stokes is a biostatistician at Boston University.
He and his colleagues looked at the reported deaths across the weeks after the fire and
compared that number to the number of deaths expected without the disaster.
We found that wildfires contributed to at least 440 deaths during the acute period of the
LA wildfires compared to approximately 31 official deaths that were recorded over the same period.
The finding suggested a substantial undercount of wildfire-related mortality in Los Angeles.
Climate worsened disasters, including wildfires, are taking a bigger toll on Americans than is
commonly recognized.

The Walt Disney Company is making some changes with its streaming services,

You might use the Hulu app to watch shows like the Bear, Abbot Elementary,
or the Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, one of its biggest hits.

I'm going to set the record straight on the swinging scandal.
Disney has decided to roll all of his children.
its Hulu shows onto the Disney Plus app next year to, quote, Unify the brand.

and also Disney's ad sales. As well as Hulu, Disney also owns ABC, FX networks, and ESPN.

partnerships with the NFL and the WWE. Netto Ulibe, NPR News.
McDonald's is back in growth mode after months of declines. The fast food giant says business in the U.S. has rebounded,
helped by special deals and a boost in visits from higher-income customers. McDonald says that sales in the U.S. grew 2.5% in the latest quarter with global sales rising for the first time in more than a year.
The company credits recent promotions like the return of the crispy chicken strips and meal deals tied to a Minecraft mood.
Still, McDonald's CEO says he remains cautious about the overall health of U.S. consumers.

I'm Rachel Martin, host of Wildcard from NPR.
I've spent years interviewing all kinds of people, and I've realized there are ideas that we all think about, but don't talk about very much.
So I made a shortcut, a deck of cards with questions that anyone can answer, questions that go deep into the experiences
that shape us.
