Starting point is 00:00:00 Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Corva Coleman. President Trump's latest tariffs kicked in overnight. Writing online, Trump says, quote, billions of dollars in tariffs are now flowing into the United States of America. Most countries are getting an import tax of 15%. Others, such as India and Switzerland, face much higher rates. And Baez Rafael NAMM explains what the tariffs could mean for the U.S. The widespread tariffs could raise over $2 billion for the U.S. over the next day. or so. That could help reduce the country's deficits, and the president has even suggested potentially handing out tariff rebate checks to Americans, but economists are concerned about the
Starting point is 00:00:42 potential effects of tariffs on the U.S. economy. Companies would likely have to pass at least some of the costs to consumers, meaning Americans will be paying higher prices. The labor market could also weaken, since businesses could grow more cautious about adding workers. President Trump still believes tariffs will be good for the U.S. It will take months, possibly years, to know their net effect. Rafael NAMM in PR News. Texas Democratic lawmakers remain out of their state as they block progress on a controversial Republican plan. The Texas GOP is seeking to redraw congressional districts in their state,
Starting point is 00:01:21 hoping to send up to five more Republicans to the U.S. Congress. Some Texas state Democrats have fled to Illinois. Yesterday, a bomb threat forced those Democrats out of their hotel in a Chicago suburb. It was a false alarm, but their location was quickly pinpointed online. Texas authorities have been looking for the lawmakers. Illinois Democratic Governor J.B. Pritzker says he is glad to host the Democrats. Let me be clear. They're welcome. These lawmakers are welcome in the state of Illinois. So are Texas Rangers. They can go visit the lakefront in Chicago.
Starting point is 00:01:54 They can come to the state fair, but they're not arresting and taking anybody away from Illinois. Governor Pritzker has told the Illinois State Police to investigate the bomb threat. The U.S. Army says all five soldiers shot yesterday at Fort Stewart, Georgia, are expected to recover from their injuries. From Georgia, public broadcasting, Peter Beello, has more. The Army says the victims were co-workers of the shooter, who was identified as 28-year-old automated logistics sergeant Cornelius Radford. At a press conference, Brigadier General John Lubis thanked local law enforcement and emergency services for their quick action. I would also like to thank the brave soldiers who immediately intervened and subdued the shooter.
Starting point is 00:02:34 These soldiers, without a doubt, prevented further casualties. Army investigators are still looking into a possible motive for the shooting, but Lubas says there is no evidence to suggest that the attack was motivated by extremist beliefs. The Army's primary focus, he says, is to care for the injured soldiers and their families. For NPR News, I'm Peter Beiello in Atlanta. On Wall Street, in pre-market trading, Dow futures are high. This is NPR. Russian officials say Russian president Vladimir Putin has agreed to meet with President Trump in coming days.
Starting point is 00:03:06 The White House has not confirmed this. Yesterday, Trump said there was a good prospect of a meeting with Putin, but Trump also said that meeting could include Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky. The Kremlin statement today did not mention the Ukrainian leader. Americans on average still consume more than half of their calories from ultra-processed food. These are products dense in energy and low in nutrition. That's according to new data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. NPR's Yuki Noguchi has more. Young people between age 1 and 18 get nearly 62% of their calories from ultra-processed foods.
Starting point is 00:03:46 Sandwiches, including hamburgers, snacks, and sweet drinks account for much of it. The study by the CDC's National Center for Health Statistics shows consumption of these foods decreases with age. Still, for those 19 or older, ultra-processed foods accounted for 53% of their calories. Reliance on these unhealthy foods is on a downward trend, however. The study looked at a two-year span between 2021 and 2023. Since 2018, consumption among youth especially has decreased. Yuki Naguchi and PR News. NASA says a space X capsule is set to undock from the International Space Station in the coming hours. Four crew members, including two Americans, are set to return home after spending five months in space. I'm Corva Coleman, NPR News.
