Live from NPR news, I'm Dale Wilman. A police officer was shot today after response. to reports of an active shooter near the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta.
Starting point is 00:00:34 It's with profound sadness that we announced the loss of the life of one of our very own DeKalb County police officers. This officer responded to the call as he did, as he was trained to do. And during that incident, he received gunfire and he lost his life in this incident. That's to tell DeKalb County interim police chief Greg Padrick. Images from the scenes show bullet holes in at least four CDC buildings. but officials say there are no reports of any other injuries. Atlanta's mayor says there were 92 children at a daycare center at the CDC, but they've all been returned to their parents.
Starting point is 00:01:08 Police say the shooter died on the scene and they have no idea yet of a motive. A lawyer for California Senator Adam Schiff says a new Justice Department investigation is infected with bias. NPR's Kerry Johnson reports that a Trump ally has been picked to help conduct the probe. A source tells NPR the new criminal probe will examine allegations, of mortgage fraud against the Democratic senator who played a key role during impeachment in President Trump's first term in office. Ed Martin will help with the investigation. Martin served as U.S. attorney in D.C. this year, but he could not win confirmation after several Republican senators worried about his support for capital rioters. Senator Schiff has hired
Starting point is 00:01:49 former Manhattan prosecutor Pete Barrara, who calls the fraud allegations false, stale, and debunked. Martin's also investigating New York Attorney General Letitia James, who denies the allegations. Kerry Johnson, NPR News, Washington. The Texas House met and adjourned today without a quorum once again. Most Democrats remain out of state to prevent the legislature from passing a Republican-backed congressional redistricting map. But as Houston Public Media's Andrew Schneider reports, Republicans are trying to force Democrats to return. Texas Speaker of the House Dustin Burroughs said one of his GOP colleagues was prepared to introduce a flood recovery and disaster preparedness bill, responding to last month's deadly
Starting point is 00:02:31 central Texas flood. He told absent Democrats the bill can't be referred to committee without a quorum present. Each one of you knows that eventually you will come back and we will pass the priorities of the special session on the call. But with each passing day, the political cost of your absence is rising and it will be paid in full. At least one Democrat who had been absent returned for Friday's brief house session. For NPR news, I'm Andrew Schneider in Houston. President Trump will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin next Friday to discuss, among other things, and end to the war with Ukraine. Trump says the meeting will take place in Alaska. The announcement comes as soldiers in Ukraine are expressing little hope for a diplomatic end to the war.

Detroit Lions' safety, Maurice Norris, was injured during a preseason game tonight against Atlanta. He was taken off the field in an ambulance when the game resumed both players, teams stood at the line of scrimmage, allowing the time to run out until officials finally called the game. There's no word so far in Norris's condition. Mexico's president says there is no chance of a U.S. invasion to target drug cartels in her country. As M.P.R. Zeta Peralta reports, this comes after media reports that President Trump has
Starting point is 00:03:53 asked the Pentagon to begin planning cross-border strikes. Multiple news outlets report that President Trump has asked the Pentagon to begin drying up plans from military strikes on drug cartels in Latin America. One of Trump's first moves when he became president was to designate organized crime groups in Mexico, El Salvador, and Venezuela as foreign terrorist organizations, which analysts say open the door to such strikes. Mexican President Claudio Schaimbaum says Mexico has been assured the U.S. will not take unilateral action of this kind in Mexico.
Starting point is 00:04:23 We'll cooperate, will collaborate, we'll collaborate, but there will not be an invasion, she said. That is totally off the table. Adaprata and Pierre News, Mexico City. Firefighters in France have finally contained that country's largest wildfire in decades. But officials say the area remains on high alert because of fears that high heat may re-ignite the flames. The fire covered some 62 square miles in the old. old wine region. At least one person was killed and hundreds of others had to evacuate the area. I'm Dale Wilman, NPR News.
