Live from NPR News, I'm Dale Wilman. The UN Security Council called another emergency meeting Saturday to discuss Israel's plan to take over gossip after 22 months of fighting. MPR. Zellander Beardsley is in Tel Aviv with the latest.
Starting point is 00:00:38 The foreign ministers of Australia, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, and Britain all strongly condemn the Israel's government's decision to launch a new large-scale military operation. They say it risks violating international humanitarian law. Germany, one of Israel's staunchest longtime supporters along with the U.S., obviously due to historical reasons, the Holocaust, said it will stop exporting military equipment to Israel that could be used in the Gaza Strip. And Israelis I was talking to say that is huge. That's NPR's Eleanor, spiritually reporting. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has retweeted and praised a video of a Christian nationalist pastor who doesn't think women should vote. More on this from NPR's Julius Simon.
Starting point is 00:01:17 The video that Secretary Hegseth retweeted is a CNN interview with Doug Wilson, the leader of an influential Christian nationalist church in Idaho. Wilson's views on the role of women aren't confined to voting. In the CNN interview, Wilson says, Women are the kind of people that people come out of. In an emailed statement to NPR, Chief Pentagon spokesperson Sean Pernel says Hegzeth is, quote, a proud member of a church affiliated with a congregation of reformed evangelical churches,
Starting point is 00:01:46 which was founded by Pastor Doug Wilson. The secretary very much appreciates many of Mr. Wilson writings and teachings. In his retweet of the Wilson interview, the U.S. Secretary of Defense wrote, quote, all of Christ for all of life. Julia Simon and Pierre News. The police officer killed by a gunman in front of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta on Friday afternoon was 33-year-old David Rose. He was a father of three and a former Marine. For member station, WABE in Atlanta, Alex Helmock has more in that story. Police say DeKalb County Officer David Rose served in Afghanistan and graduated from the Police Academy in March.
Starting point is 00:02:27 The gunman, Patrick Joseph White, shot dozens of rounds hitting at least four CDC buildings. White was later found dead in a nearby pharmacy. Police have not said how he died. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert Kennedy Jr., whose department oversees the CDC, sent an email to staff saying no one should be targeted with violence for their work. A group of former CDC employees fired by the Trump administration called for Kennedy's resignation. They said he has fueled mistrust and hostility with his vaccine skepticism. Starting point is 00:03:03 Four astronauts are back on Earth after a five-month stay at the International Space Station. Their space capsule parachuted into the Pacific off the Southern California coast on Saturday, less than 24 hours after leaving the lab. This was the first NASA crew to splash down in 50 years. This is NPR News. A 5.9 magnitude earthquake hit off the southwest coast of Guatemala Friday, people in the nation's capital reported feeling the ground shake, but there have been no reports of damage or injuries. The Central American country is located along a major fault zone between the North American and Caribbean plates. For the first time, a woman has worked as an umpire for a Major League Baseball regular season.
Starting point is 00:03:46 in game. From Georgia public broadcasting, Peter Biela reports that Jen Powell worked a double-header Saturday between the Atlanta Braves and the Miami Marlins. Powell says she's been dreaming of this day since 2015 when she tried out for a scholarship to umpire school. Since then she's worked more than 1,200 minor league games and some major league spring training games. She says at Truis Park in Atlanta today, her dream came true. It was pretty amazing when we took the field and it seemed like quite a few people. It started clapping and saying my name and stuff. So that was pretty intense and very, very emotional. The black umpires hat she wore during her first game is now headed to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. She's set to make history again Sunday

Tommy Fleetwood has a one-shot lead going into the final round of the PGA event underway in Memphis this weekend. He lost three shots. off his lead after shooting a double bogey on the third hole while Justin Rose made a birdie. Fleetwood rebuilt his lead to three shots before making yet another bogey. Rose is one shot off the pace, meanwhile, while World Number One Scotty Sheffler is two strokes back. I'm Dale Wilman, NPR News. There's a lot of news happening.
