Starting point is 00:00:42 White House Monday in a follow-up to Trump's Alaska summit with Putin. At the start of the White House meeting, European leaders expressed cautious optimism as President Trump outlined the contours of a potential peace deal to end Russia's war in Ukraine. In a very significant step, President Putin agreed that Russia would accept security guarantees for Ukraine. And this is one of the key points that we need to consider. And we're going to be considering that at the table also. Like, who will do what? But he added there would likely need to be a possible exchange of territory where Russia has made gains. Trump said he hoped a trilateral meeting would be possible very soon. And Zelenskyy echoed that hope. Tamara Keith, NPR News.
Starting point is 00:01:27 House Democrats in Texas have ended their two-week walkouts setting the stage for a controversial passage of a congressional map that favors Republicans in next year's midterm elections from Houston Public Media, Andrew Schneider, reports. Texas Speaker of the House Dustin Burroughs said the time had come for the chamber to get back to business. This body has endured wars, economic depressions, and quorum breaks dating back to the very first session. It will withstand this too, and what will remain in is a chamber where the majority has, has the right to prevail, and the minority has the right to be heard. That said, Burroughs announced that those Democrats for whom arrest warrants had been issued would only be allowed to leave the chamber in the custody of Department of Public Safety Troopers who would ensure their return on Wednesday. Starting point is 00:02:15 storm watches are in effect for North Carolina's outer banks. As Hurricane Aaron spins in the Atlantic Ocean parallel with the Bahamas before it is expected to turn north, Aaron is a category a three hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 125 miles per hour. Cheshay Adams is Bermuda's acting minister of national security. He is urging residents to take this storm seriously. The waters will be very dangerous and lives will be placed at risk. I must be absolutely clear. Although Hurricane Aaron is not a direct threat, this is a powerful hurricane and it is the

While Aaron is not expected to make landfall in the United States, the National Hurricane Center says it will significantly impact the mid-Atlantic region with waves of 15 to 20 feet in possible coastal flooding. North Carolina officials have issued mandatory evacuation orders for several islands. A mixed day on Wall Street, the Dow down, the NASDAQ, and the S&P up. This is NPR News. Jordan is bringing back compulsory military service. as NPR's Jane Arraff reports, the move comes amid worries that Jordan's neighbors, Israel, will try to expand across the region.
Starting point is 00:03:35 Jordan abolished compulsory service in 1991. The plan announced Monday, we'll start with 18-year-old men doing three months of training. The Israeli right-wing extremist behavior is a direct attack on the security of the region. Communications Minister Mohamed Mammany told reporters, in announcing details of the plan. Jordan has a peace treaty with Israel, but it has long feared that the Israeli government will expel more Palestinians to the kingdom.
Starting point is 00:04:07 Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last week expressed support for a greater Israel, a concept that would envision Israel taking over Jordan and other countries. Jane Arraf, NPR News, Amman. A year after the U.S. Postal Service began to push to replace it's thousands of aging gasoline vehicles with a mostly electric fleet. Some Republicans in Congress are trying to end that effort. Iowa Senator Joni Ernst says she will go ahead with the bill to rescind what's left of $3 billion in federal funding. She says she supports gasoline-powered
Starting point is 00:04:42 trucks with corn-based ethanol. Iowa is a huge corn-producing state and 40 plants in the state produced nearly 30 percent of the nation's ethanol. Texas health officials say nearly eight months after a measles outbreak that killed two children and sickened 762, it is now over. Nearly 100 people were hospitalized. This is NPR.
