With thousands of federal police and National Guard troops,
patrolling Washington, D.C. The Trump administration insists its plan to reduce crime is working.
But Justice Department figures before the August 7th crackdown began showed that crime in D.C.
was steadily declining to a 30-year low. In Atlanta Thursday, Vice President J.D. Vance said
other cities should take note of what the White House is doing. What we've done is we have focused on
Washington, D.C., because it's a federal city under our jurisdiction, but we certainly hope that
whether it's Atlanta or anywhere else, people are going to do.
look around and say, we don't have to live like this. It turns out if you just go and arrest the bad
guys, you can have cities and streets that are safe again. And we hope that people see what we're
doing in Washington, D.C. and follow our example all across the country. While the Trump administration
says the streets in D.C. are much safer. Some restaurant owners say business is down since the
extra patrols began. Democrats in California passed a controversial redistricting proposal that would
establish new congressional district lines favoring their party ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
Cap Radio's Laura Fitzgerald reports it comes as Texas is expected to approve a similar proposal
favoring Republicans.
The California proposal could yield five new congressional seats for Democrats next year.
Governor Gavin Newsom says the plan will nullify the Texas redistricting proposal.
Because when all things are equal, we're all playing by the same set rules, there's no question
that the Republican Party
will be the minority party
in the House of Representatives next year.
Republicans oppose the legislation,
arguing it sidelines California's
independent redistricting commission.
The measure now heads to voters
who will weigh in
during a special election on November 4th.

The State Department says
it has constantly been reviewing
all U.S. visa holders
and revoked many more
than the Biden administration did.
NPR's Michelle Kellerman
reports the department is also
screening social media feeds of visa applications as part of this.
In a statement, a spokesman says that the department is continuously vetting the more than 55
million foreigners who currently hold valid visas. The Trump administration has revoked two
times the number of visas as compared to last year, four times the number of student visas.
The Trump administration has been cracking down on students who took part in pro-Palestinian
protests on college campuses and doing more expansive.
social media screening of applicants. So far this year, the State Department has revoked
more than 6,000 student visas for a range of reasons, from traffic violations and visa overstays
to allege support for terrorism. Michelle Kellerman, NPR News, the State Department.
The federal government on Thursday announced it is halting new visas for commercial truck drivers.
You're listening to NPR News. Longtime Democratic Congressman Lloyd Doggett, who
represents Austin, Texas, will not seek re-election to a new term next year if a redrawn map is
in place for the 2026 midterm election. Doggett is seating the Texas 37th congressional district
to Congressman Greg Sazar, who represents the nearby district. So Sazar, who is 42 years younger,
can seek re-election to Congress without the two Democrats having to run against each other.
Meanwhile, the Texas State Senate is expected to vote Friday on new district maps, which
could give Republicans five additional seats.
The lower house of the legislature passed the measure on Thursday.
Six people are dead after an unspecified incident in a rural dairy in Colorado.
As Ray Solomon with member station KUNC reports, the cause is under investigation.
Local fire department crews responded to a call for a confined space rescue at the Prospect Valley Dairy of northeast of Denver.
When they got inside, they found six bodies.
Weld County Chief Deputy Coroner Jolene Weiner says it's too early to share details about the nature of the confined space or the cause of the incident.
We have confirmed six dead. They are all Hispanic males. We are investigating these deaths as possibly being the result of gas exposure in a confined space.
Confined spaces at Dairies can include manure tanks, silos, tunnels, and bunkers where toxic gases can accumulate.
