President Trump is suggesting that he'll next send federal resources
Starting point is 00:00:35 to Chicago. At NPR's Danielle Kurtzleben reports that Trump also mentioned other cities where he would consider sending resources. With J.D. Vance at his side, Trump called Chicago a mess. And the people in Chicago, Mr. Vice President, are screaming for us to come. They're wearing red hats, just like this. But they're wearing red hats. African American ladies, beautiful ladies. They're saying, please, President Trump, come to Chicago. He later added that he hasn't taken concrete steps for this plan. Trump also suggested sending personnel to San Francisco and New York. Under the D.C. Home Rule Act, a president can take control of the city's police for 30 days in cases of emergency,
Starting point is 00:01:16 after which Congress would be needed to extend that time frame. However, the president does not have similar powers over other cities. Danielle Kurtzleben, NPR News, the White House. At least five people have died and dozens of other people were. injured Friday after their tour bus crashed just east of Buffalo, New York. From member station, Buffalo, Toronto Public Media, Michael Loss, has more on our story. The bus was bringing more than 50 people back to New York City after a visit to Niagara Falls when it lost control and rolled over on Interstate 90.
Starting point is 00:01:47 Major Andre Ray, commander of New York State Police Troop T, says that while operator impairment has been ruled out, other driver-related causes are being investigated. It's believed the operator became distracted. lost control overcorrected and ended up on the right shoulder there. The investigation is still underway. It's too early to state whether or whether or not charges will take place. Dozens were taken to hospitals. Initial reports that a child was among those killed have since been corrected.
Starting point is 00:02:16 For NPR News, I'm Michael Loss in Buffalo. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell indicated Friday that an interest rate cut could happen in the next few months. But speaking at a conference in Wyoming on Friday, he said President Trump's Iraq. erratic tariff policies still present a potential barrier to a drop. It will continue to take time for tariff increases to work their way through supply chains, chains, and distribution networks. Moreover, tariff rates continue to evolve, potentially prolonging the adjustment process. It's also possible, however, that the upward pressure on prices from tariffs could spur
Starting point is 00:02:52 a more lasting inflation dynamic, and that is a risk to be assessed and managed. It was the last time, Powell, we'll attend the economic. meeting while in office, and he received a standing ovation after he completed his speech. Wall Street responded to Powell's comments with increases across the board. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 846 points, the NASDAQ up 396 points, and the S&P 500 closed up 96 points. DeKalb County Officer David Rose is being remembered as a fearless public servant who loved food, motorcycles, basketball, and most of all his family. After serving in the United States Marine Corps, he graduated from the DeKalb Police Academy in March as the class leader. Sergeant Trey Jones was his lead instructor. He carried himself with a calm presence, a quiet confidence, and a clear sense of purpose that made it undeniable he was going to lead. Rose was 33. He had two children and a third on the way with his wife, Mariana. The Trump administration has not condemned vaccine disinformation. For NPR News, I'm Shamin Cruz in Atlanta.
Starting point is 00:04:19 Hall of Fame Jockey Ron Turcott has died. He was 84 years old. His business partner says Turcotte died of natural causes at his home in New Brunswick. Turcott Road's secretariat to the Triple Crown in 1973. He won the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Belmont Stakes twice each before falling off a horse and suffering injuries that made him a paraplegic. A family of nesting ospreys has disrupted the start of the fall football and soccer seasons for a high school in Minnesota. The ospreys are nesting on top of a light pole at the Apple Valley High School football field. The raptors are protected so the lights could not be used.
