I'm Peter Sagle. NPR is very serious, mostly. It treats newsmakers with all due respect, almost all the time. It brings you the most important information about the issues that really matter, usually, and it never asks famous people about things they don't know anything about, except once in a while. Join us for the great exception. Listen to Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me, the news quiz from NPR.
Live from NPR News, I'm Dale Wilman. The full Texas legislature has just passed the redistricting plan called for by Press.
President Trump. The effort could add five seats to the Republican majority in the U.S. House
of Representatives. That measure now goes to the governor for his signature. A Salvador
National has been released from a jail in Tennessee and will be back in Maryland for the first
time since being wrongfully deported to El Salvador by the Trump administration in March.
For member station, WPLN, Mariana Bakiao reports.
Kilmar-Abrego-Garcia faces human smuggling charges stemming from a 2022 traffic stop in Tennessee,
where he's been held in custody since the Supreme Court mandated his return to the U.S.
For now, Obrego-Garcia's lawyers have confirmed that he was in route to reunite with his family in Maryland.
It's not clear how long he'll be able to stay there, though.
Federal immigration officials have warned that he could still be deported before his trial in January.
For NPR news, I'm Mariana Bacayahu in Nashville.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney says Ottawa will remove
counter tariffs on American goods.
As Dan Carpenchuk reports, the decision
comes a day after Carney and President
Donald Trump talked by phone.
Canada's 25% retaliatory
tariffs went into effect this past March
covering a long list of American products
from fruits to clothing.
But Carney says Canada will now lift the bulk
of them. We will now match the United
States by removing all
of Canada's tariffs on U.S. goods
specifically covered under Cozma.
Carney says what it means is that
Canada and the U.S. have reestablished
free trade for the vast majority of goods. However, Ottawa will retain its retaliatory tariffs
on steel, aluminum, and automobiles. Karnie's announcement comes a day after he and Trump
agreed to ramp up stalled trade talks. Canada's retaliatory tariffs will be lifted beginning
September the 1st. For NPR News, I'm Dan Carpenchuk in Toronto. At least five people are dead
and many others were injured when a tour bus returning to New York City from Niagara Falls
flipped on Interstate 90 in western New York today.
police major Andre Ray says there were 54 people on the bus at the time of the accidents.
At this point, and again, it's still under investigation. It's believed the operator became
distracted, lost control, overcorrected, and ended up on the right shoulder there.
Ray says a number of people were thrown from the bus during the accident. The state
threw a authority shut down the road for several hours after the accident occurred. The
world's leading authority on food crises says Gaza City is now gripped by famine, and the
IPC says that famine is likely to spread unless an immediate ceasefire is called, and
restrictions on humanitarian aid to the enclave are lifted. Numerous groups have been
warning of famine in the region for many weeks. You're listening to NPR News. Leaders of South
America's Amazon countries have agreed on a joint plan to protect the brain.
rainforest. The blueprint is called the Declaration of Bogota, and it calls for greater cooperation
across the region. Scientists say the Amazon is a major storage area for carbon being emitted by
humans, and its loss could accelerate global warming. New court documents show Elon Musk attempted
to enlist Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg for an open-A-I takeover. As NPR's Bobby Allen reports,
the two billionaire rivals both see Chat GPT as a major threat. Musk approach Zuckerberg as part of Musk's
unsolicited $97 billion bid for Open AI, and Zuckerberg did not move forward. That's according to a
new legal filing in Musk's lawsuit against Open AI for allegedly violating its founding principles
as a research lab. Musk has long had animosity towards Zuckerberg, once challenging him to a cage
match that never happened. In recent months, Zuckerberg and OpenAI have been in a fierce competition
for top AI talent, but that showdown did not inspire Zuckerberg to join Musk's attempt to acquire the
chat GPT maker. OpenAI says the company is not for sale and has dismissed Musk's bid as a
publicity stunt. Bobby Allen, NPR News. President Trump announced on Friday that the draw for the
2026 soccer World Cup tournament will be held on December 5th. The event determines the tournament's
groupings as well as the opening round games. The draw will take place at the Kennedy Center in
Washington, D.C. Trump made the announcement during a White House visit by soccer's
governing board precedents. I'm Dale Wilman, NPR News. This message comes from Wise, the app for
