A federal appeals court ruled yesterday, most of President Trump's tariffs are illegal.
But the court held the tariffs may remain in effect until mid-October
to give the Trump administration time to appeal the case to the Supreme Court.
NPR's Ron Elving has more.
This position here is going to depend on what a series of courts, ultimately the U.S. Supreme Court, should decide.
Did Trump follow the law in his end run around Congress?
in setting these tariffs, or is he within his rights?
That's been a crucial question all along,
but Friday's ruling from the full Court of Appeals
for the Federal Circuit that really raises the stakes.
So it will go to the Supreme Court eventually.
But in the meantime, it's back with a trade court
that has been tough on Trump in the past.
NPR's Ron Elving reporting,
Trump administration official Kerry Lake says
she's begun laying off hundreds of staffers
at the Voice of America and its federal parent.
As NPR's David Fulkenflick reports, this is part of her effort to reduce the federally funded international broadcaster to bear bones.
Carrie Lake has tried to do this several times before, making good an executive order from President Trump.
Each time she has broken rules or laws in doing so.
She fired all the contractors. Most employees are now on paid leave instead.
This time she told a judge in court papers Thursday, she was eliminating 486 jobs at the Voice of America and nearly 50 at the U.S. Agency for Global Media.
The agency started sending out notices to those affected Friday night.
Three of those suing her say this, too, looks to be unlawful.
Judge Royce Lamberth, who is overseeing their cases, said in a Monday court hearing that Lake is verging uncontemptive court.

Russia launched a sweeping attack on Ukraine overnight in the southeastern part of the country.
Local officials say one person was killed, at least 24 others were wounded, when drones and missiles struck residential buildings.
A Ukrainian politician was shot dead in the western city of Lviv today.
No arrests have been made as police tried to piece together what happened.
NPR's Polina Litvinova reports from Kiev.
Andrei Parubi was killed in the street and died at the scene
before paramedics got to him, according to officials.
Ukrainian media report that attacker was dressed as a delivery service courier.
He fired several shots at Parubi and then fled.
President Volody Morsalensky says Parubis,
murder was carefully planned, and law enforcement is updating him on the progress of the
investigation. Parubi was one of the leaders of the popular uprising in 2013-2014, known as the
Revolution of Dignity. Later, he was a chairman of the Ukrainian parliament. After Zelensky
became president, Parubi was re-elected as a deputy of an opposition party. He was known
for his hard line against Russia. Polina Litvinova, NPR News, Kyiv.

Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe, a Republican, is calling state lawmakers into a special session
next week to consider redistricting. Texas just redrew its congressional districts in a bid to pick
up more Republican seats in the U.S. House next year. Summer may be coming to an end, but so are
the August scleries. As NPR's NETA Ulby reports, that's how some on social media describe this
time of year. In a TikTok video that's gone viral, a young woman named Reagan Sweeney compares the
months of summer to the weekend. Okay, hear me out. June is Friday, July is Saturday, and August
is Sunday. In June, she argues, you're still catching your breath from work and school. July is
just pure, an adulterated summer. But then there is August. Which feels like the longest Sunday
scary of the year. It's still the weekend, but it feels like it's coming to a close
any minute. Any minute. That's why many TikTokers have been posting videos hashtagged August
Scarries, a number of them by teachers. Netta Ulabi, NPR News. Three Scottish brothers
have set a new world record in rowing. Jamie Ewan and Lachlan McLean arrived in Cairns Australia
today from Peru. A trip of 9,000 miles. It took them 139 days to become the first team to achieve
the full crossing from South America to Australia. Along the way, the brothers survived violent
storms, injuries, and seasickness. I'm Nora Rahm. NPR News in Washington.
