Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis
held its first mass last night since the deadly shooting there Wednesday morning.
NPR's Jason DeRose reports from Minneapolis.
Puritioners gathered in the school gym rather than the sanctuary at Annunciation.
The church building itself is still a crime scene.
During the sermon, the congregation's pastor,
Zarin acknowledged how difficult the coming weeks and months will be.
My good people of enunciation, my good people of Minneapolis and beyond, we are in a very low place.
We are in a lower place than we could have ever imagined.
But Zarin offered a word of hope as well, telling those gathered that despite sorrow and loss,
God always calls people to begin again.

At the Vatican today, Pope Leo denounced.
what he called a pandemic of arms, speaking in English during a public prayer for the victims of the
Minneapolis shooting. Leo appealed for an end to what he said was the logic of weapons. At least
seven victims were still hospitalized as of Saturday. Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson pushing back
against President Trump. He signed an executive order this weekend ahead of any potential National
Guard deployment. It's called the Protecting Chicago Initiative. Protecting Chicago will ensure that every
Chicagoan knows their rights, that every single family is prepared, and every part of city government
is directed to protect the people of Chicago from federal action. Johnson's order prevents
city police from cooperating with any federal immigration enforcement activity, and Johnson is
demanding that President Trump stand down from any plan to deploy national guard troops to the
city. The Trump administration has asked a military base outside of Chicago for support on
immigration operations in Chicago. The Trump administration says public housing agencies must share
the immigration status of their tenants. MPR. Jennifer Lutton reports they have 30 days to comply
or risk losing federal funding. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Scott Turner issued the
directive in a tweet. He said it was the beginning of the end for illegals in taxpayer-funded housing.
undocumented immigrants do not get housing subsidies, but they are allowed to live with family members who do.
The first Trump administration tried to change that, and the current one has been reviewing a similar proposal.
Conservatives argue it's not fair to let mixed-status families live in public housing, given the years-long wait list for it.
Now, housing authorities face a deadline to share information on all tenants, including their immigration status.
One immigrant advocate says it seems designed to see.

Thousands of people have held protests across Mexico to mark the International Day of the victims of enforced disappearances.
The country has more than 130,000 people officially listed as missing. The BBC's Will Grant has more.
The widespread of cities, states and municipalities where demonstrations were held
illustrated the extent to which the problem of forced disappearances affects communities and
families across Mexico. Tens of thousands of people have disappeared in Mexico over the past
two decades, mostly with impunity. Many affected families have formed search teams known as
Buscadores who scour the countryside and the deserts of northern Mexico following tip-offs,
often from the cartels themselves as to the whereabouts of mass graves.
The BBC's Will Grant reporting on this weekend's protests in Mexico.
Two civilian workers have been indicted by a grand jury for their alleged role in a fuel spill in Hawaii's Pearl Harbor
that sicken thousands of people over Thanksgiving in 2021.
The indictment alleges the Institute provided the Navy with inaccurate information about the spill.
The indictments are the first result from the spill, although the Navy has issued written reprimand,
to three retired officers. President Trump says he will issue an executive order mandating voter ID
in a social media post this weekend. Trump said ID must be part of every vote. He also said he wants
to restrict mail-in voting and allow only paper ballots. It's not clear how the president could
enforce such a measure. The Constitution gives authority of elections to the states.
