The mayor of Chicago Brandon Johnson is limiting how much the city's police force can
cooperate with federal law enforcement agents.
As NPR's Joe Hernandez reports, it's in response to threats from the Trump
administration to launch an immigration crackdown in the Midwest City.
President Trump has criticized Chicago leaders for not doing enough to prevent crime,
and now federal officials are suggesting they may ramp up immigration enforcement
operations there. But on Saturday, Chicago's Democratic mayor, Brandon Johnson, signed an executive
order setting limits on how the city's police department can be involved. It bars Chicago police
from collaborating with federal officers conducting civil immigration enforcement operations or
with U.S. military personnel on patrols. It also requires Chicago police to wear their uniforms
and refrain from wearing masks so they can be distinguished from federal agents. Johnson says
he doesn't want the Chicago Police Department to be deputized by Trump.

benefits that lawmakers received this in an effort to quell anti-government protest. At least five
people have been killed. NPR's Anthony Kuhn reports that looters Sunday entered lawmakers' homes
amid discontent over inflation and unemployment. In the early hours of Sunday, crowds ransacked
the home of lawmakers and Indonesia's finance minister. Protest broke out Monday following reports
that lawmakers had given themselves a monthly housing allowance more than 10 times would a worker
making minimum wage in Jakarta can earn in a month. More protests erupted after a police-armored
vehicle ran over and killed a motorcycle taxi driver. Rioters in the city of Makasar set fire to the
local assembly building, and three people were killed in the blaze or jumping from the building to
escape it. President Prabuo Subianto has canceled a trip to attend a military parade in China

The Powerball jackpot has soared to an estimated $1.1 billion after there was no winner in Saturday night's drawing.
Monday's Labor Day drawing will be the fifth largest prize in the game's history,
and the 40th since the jackpot was last won on May 31st in California.
The Multi-State Lottery Association says the odds.
of winning the big prize are won in 292 million. The Self-Realization Fellowship's historic Lake Shrine in
Los Angeles is reopening after closing in January due to the Palisades Fire. Kevin Tidmarsh
of Member Station LAISD reports. The Interfaith Shrine's historic assets include century-old
Hollywood sets and some of Mahatma Gandhi's ashes. Its ground survived the fire, for the most part,
using water pumped from the lake on site.
After months of remediation, the fellowship is welcoming visitors back.
Brother Satyanda is Lake Shrine's minister in charge.
Some of our neighbors have said, oh, wow, it doesn't seem like any disaster ever happened here.
He hopes the reopening brings peace to the fire-scarred palisades.

President Trump said late Saturday he plans to sign an executive order mandating voter
identification from every voter. Also, he said the order will severely limit mail in voting,
except for people who are very ill or in the military. However, federal elections are run by state
and local officials, and it's unclear what constitutional authority the president has when it
comes to enacting such a measure. November 3rd, 2026 is the date of the midterm elections. From
