Live from NPR news, I'm Dale Wilman. Authorities in Nepal and China say the death toll from catastrophic flooding along the border of Nepal and Tibet. Last week has reached more than 900 with more than 3,000 others missing. For the first time, Chinese authorities have released the nationalities of the 261 missing foreigners, which includes 18 Americans. And as NPR's Jennifer Pack reports, there are dozens more U.S. citizens missing in Nepal. Officials called for a moment of silence at a press conference in Tibet on Sunday. Then Su Peng Cheng, a researcher at the Chengdu Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment,

said this disaster started when a massive chunk of ice broke off a glacier. It sent a rush of water, ice and mud to smash through the Jilong-Raswa border checkpoint. The whole thing took less than seven minutes, he says. There was no time for warning or to full. flee. The floods continued down to Nepal. Their authorities gave the nationalities of the missing very early on. In contrast, Chinese officials took five days to do the same. Jennifer Pack, NPR News, Beijing. A flash flood raced across the bottom of Arizona's Grand Canyon this weekend, leading to evacuations. Chris Clements of member station KNAU reports, as of Sunday evening,

one person has died and about 15 other people remain missing or unaccounted for. On Saturday, afternoon, between a half inch and an inch of rain fell on parts of the Grand Canyon in about 30 minutes. The resulting flood swept down a creek bed to the Colorado River, splintering bridges, demolishing houses, and temporarily beeching boaters. The flood also mangled the only pipeline that delivers water from roaring springs to hotels and businesses on the south rim. Officials say they used helicopters to evacuate more than 60 people from the bottom of the canyon. with more evacuations to follow. For NPR News, I'm Chris Clements in Flagstaff.

Jury deliberations resume in Massachusetts Monday in the trial of Lindsay Clancy, who's charged with killing her three children. As Deborah Becker from member station, WBUR reports, Clancy's lawyers are using an insanity defense. Lindsay Clancy's defense says she was experiencing postpartum psychosis and should not be held criminally responsible for killing her children.

In Massachusetts, that means that the prosecution has to prove Clancy was mentally well enough to understand or control her actions. Boston defense attorney Keith Halpern says that could work in Clancy's favor. Massachusetts law is actually more favorable to defendants than many states. National data show the insanity defense is argued in only about 1% of felony cases. For NPR News, I'm Deborah Becker in Boston. And this is NPR News. A commercial tanker ship caught fire near the Strait of Formuz early Monday. Iran's Navy says the ship was transiting an illegal route south of the strait when it was stopped after hitting two naval mines.

It's the latest in a weekend of attacks. US forces hit Iranian rocket launches on an island in the strait. It was the first U.S. military action in a month. Later, Iran said it responded to those strikes by firing ballistic missiles at two U.S. military facilities in Jordan. Health officials in North Carolina say some people may have been exposed recently to rabies through baby goats at a mobile petting zoo. From member station WUNC, Bradley George reports that the infected animals travel to 10 locations around the states. The goats from farm adventures in Iredell County were likely exposed to rabies by a skunk that got into their pen. The petting zoo held mobile events for children and the elderly around the state.

It's not clear how many people may have been in contact. with the animals, but organizers are trying to notify people who may have handled the baby goats. Human rabies cases are rare. The State Health Department says none have been reported in North Carolina since 2011. For NPR News, I'm Bradley George in Chapel Hill. Scotty Sheffler won the PGA championship at Atlanta Sunday. It's his second win for the event and that moves him past Tiger Woods on the PGA tour career earnings list. Sheffler began the final round back by three strokes, but he took the lead on the 13th hole, Victor Hovlin, who started out today as the leader finished in second, while Ryan Gerard ended in third, four strokes off the lead.
