President Trump says he's ready to deploy National Guard troops to the city of Chicago after a weekend where eight people died and 58 were wounded in gun violence. Chicago is a hellhole right now. Baltimore is a hell hall right now. Trump says Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker should ask him to send in troops.
Starting point is 00:00:40 Pritzker told reporters he is not asking, but they're obviously ready to go. So in the absence of significant federal coordination, we've gathered information from unauthorized patriotic officials inside the government and from well-sourced reporters about Donald Trump's plan, which is to deploy armed military personnel to the streets of Chicago. National Guard troops are already on the ground in Washington, D.C., where Mayor Muriel Bowser has ordered an emergency operation center to continue to work with a number of federal law enforcement entities with no indication of an end date. We get more on this story from Alex Koma of member station WAMU in Washington. Bowser is directing local authorities to coordinate with the federal
Starting point is 00:01:24 government, quote, to the maximum extent allowable by law, even after Trump returns control of the city's police department to D.C. leaders. She's previously said she welcomes the surge of federal officers into the city, despite her critiques of some of their tactics. That's earned her criticism from other D.C. lawmakers and stands in contrast to the much more defiant approach embraced by mayors in Baltimore and Chicago. Still, Bowser says she will renew her push to get federal officers to clearly identify themselves and stop wearing masks, after facing frequent complaints from residents. Starting point is 00:02:02 to help process a backlog of immigration cases. With heightened prosecution of illegal immigration under President Trump, there's an estimated backlog of 3.5 million cases. The Health Ministry in Gaza says nearly 200 people died from malnutrition in August. deaths from starvation in the region are soaring, and PR's Aya Batrawe has details. A report written by the world's foremost experts on hunger declared a famine in Gaza City nearly two weeks ago, yet deaths from malnutrition have only climbed since then, reaching an all-time high in the past 24 hours. Israel's government has dismissed the findings as false and is instead moving to halt all aid to Gaza City, as it mobilizes tens of thousands of troops to invade the city.
Starting point is 00:02:50 The UN says tens of thousands of people have already been displaced from their homes in Gaza City in recent weeks. Meanwhile, mediators in Egypt and Qatar say Israel's government has still not responded to a ceasefire proposal, agreed to by Hamas, that would release some hostages. Starting point is 00:03:24 the 80th anniversary of Japan's surrender and the end of World War II. Russia's Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un are attending. Tensions are rising between the U.S. and Venezuela, just days after President Trump deployed U.S. gunboats to the waters off South America, he said U.S. forces had destroyed a drug-laden vessel from Venezuela. Reporter John Otis has more. Trump announced the attack by the U.S. Navy from the White House. Over the last few minutes, literally shot out a boat, a drug-carrying boat, a lot of drugs in that boat. These came out of Venezuela.
Starting point is 00:04:01 In a social media post, Trump wrote that 11, quote, terrorists were killed. He described them as members of the Tren der Agua, a Venezuelan criminal gang. It was the first confirmed U.S. attack since Trump ordered Navy destroyers and crews. to the Caribbean to help stop the flow of illegal drugs. Washington accuses Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro of leading a drug cartel. Maduro claims that the U.S. military buildup is meant to overthrow his government. For NPR News, I'm John Otis.
