Live from NPR News, I'm Lakshmi Singh.
A federal judge in California finds that the Trump administration's use of National Guard troops and active duty Marines for immigration enforcement in Southern California earlier this year was illegal.
Here's NPR's Jasmine Garz.
Lawyers for the Trump administration argued the troops deployed to Los Angeles were protecting federal immigration officers.
But a judge has ruled the administration violated federal law when it ordered troops into the L.A. area.
However, the judge did not require remaining troops to be withdrawn.
The ruling comes as the Trump administration discusses deploying the National Guard to other Democratic-led cities.
Chicago, Baltimore, and New York have been named.
The administration has already deployed National Guard troops to Washington, D.C.
They've been patrolling parts of the city for nearly three weeks.

the complete release of the government's files related to the late financier and sex
offender, Jeffrey Epstein. He spoke with NPR's Morning Edition.
I'm working closely with Congressman Thomas Massey. We have 12 Republicans who have co-sponsored
it, and we're very confident that we will get over six Republicans to sign it. That will
force a full vote in the House. And the prospect of a government shutdown also looms over Congress
as lawmakers return this week from their August recess. Republican Senator Joni Ernst has
official today, the lawmaker from Iowa formally announced on X. She will not run next year.
I will not be seeking re-election in 2026. This was no easy decision. I love my state and country.
It's the very reason why I decided to wear our nation's uniform and run for elected office in the first place.
Ernst was the first female combat veteran Iowa voters elected to the U.S. Senate. In Brazil, the Supreme Court has begun its trial of the
Country's former far-right president on charges he attempted a coup to stay in power, the trial unprecedented in Brazil's modern democracy, also being closely watched by President Trump, who has rallied to the defense of the ex-leader.
Here's NPR's Kerry Kahn.
Jaya Bolsonaro faces five charges, including leading an armed criminal organization to stay in power after his 2020 election loss.
Trump has demanded the case be dropped. He slapped Brazil with 50 percent tariffs.
The U.S. sanctioned the lead justice in the trial and revoked his visa.
Lisa. Opening the trial that Justice Alessandre de Morais referred to, quote,
enemies of national sovereignty without mentioning the U.S. or President Trump,
national sovereignty will never be vilified, negotiated, or extorted, he stated before reading
the trial summary. Seven other defendants are on trial with Bolsonaro, if convicted
Bolsonaro, who is 70, could face more than 40 years in prison. Kerry Kahn, NPR News, Rio de Janeiro.

Afghanistan's been struck by a magnitude 5.2 earthquake, threatening to add to the casualties from another powerful earthquake just two days ago.
The government's appealing to other countries to send humanitarian aid, but international aid is limited due to funding cuts and resources being used in other crisis zones.
The Trump administration is being allowed to terminate more than $16 billion in grants to nonprofits who are fighting climate change.
This under a federal appeals court ruling today.
One of the world's foremost fashion magazines is announcing a change in leadership.
NPR's Netta Ulibe reports a longtime editor-in-chief of Vogue magazine has announced her successor.
Rumors about Anna Wintour stepping down have been swirling for weeks.
You can hear the new editor-in-chief of American Vogue in her previous role hosting Vogue magazine's podcast.
This is the run-through. I'm Chloe Mal.
Mal also edited Vogue's website.
39 years old, she has worked at Vogue for 14 years.
Mal is the daughter of Hollywood star Candice Bergen and French film director Louis Moll.
Her new role might best be described as transitional.
Anna Wintour is still her boss.
Wintour remains as chief content officer at Condé Nest that publishes Vogue.
She's made it publicly known she is not yet moving out of her office.
Mal has said she plans to keep Vogue relevant in a fading market, in part by publishing the magazine less frequently.
