Starting point is 00:00:30 President Trump is now back at the White House after a quick trip to New York to watch the U.S. Open Men's single championship game where Spanish player Carlos Alcaraz beat his rival Yanik's center of Italy. Landing at Joint Base Andrews, Trump was asked about a new U.S. deal to end the war in Gaza and secure the release of the remaining hostages. We're trying to get it ended. Get the hostages back. Get it ended.
Starting point is 00:00:55 We got them all back, but 20. And as you know, we have 20 plus there are a lot of. unfortunately dead bodies involved and they want them back. The parents want them back. Trump told reporters, I think we are going to have a deal on Gaza very soon. A day earlier, authorities in Gaza released new casualty figures on the 700th day of war between Israel and Hamas, saying more than 64,000 people are dead and at least 10,000 are still missing. Over in London, the number of arrests made it yesterday's pro-Palestinian demonstration has risen to 8,000. As Vicki Barker reports, public feelings remain raw around the Gaza War.
Starting point is 00:01:35 While police were hauling off hundreds of protesters holding signs in support of the prescribed Palestine Action Group, some 20,000 other demonstrators were marching through London at one of the regular Saturday actions opposing Israel's war in Gaza, with a number holding signs accusing Israel of genocide. At the same time, an organization called the Campaign, against anti-Semitism had organized its own march for Sunday. The share of the British public holding views deemed anti-Semitic has doubled in five years, it says, and many British Jews now conceal outward signs of their faith to avoid intimidation, even violence. For NPR news, I'm Vicki Barker in London. South Korea says it's reached an agreement for the release of workers
Starting point is 00:02:26 who were detained in Georgia last week. They were targeted during an immigration raid at a Hyundai plant. NPR's Anthony Kuhn reports the South Korean government is expressing concern and regret over how the arrest were handled. South Korea's Yonhap News Agency quotes presidential chief of staff Kanghoun-shek is saying that officials have concluded negotiations for the release of the detained workers, and once administrative procedures are complete, a chartered plane will head to Georgia to bring the workers home. Authorities rated the plant on Thursday and arrested more than 450 workers, including more than 300 South Korea nationals
Starting point is 00:03:01 for alleged immigration violations. The plant is run by South Korea's Hyundai and LG companies. It's an example of the kind of high-tech factories both the Biden and Trump administrations have tried to attract to the U.S. Anthony Kuhn, NPR News, Seoul. And this is NPR News from New York City. There's a clear upset in Sunday's provincial election in Buenos Aires. Argentina's opposition left-leaning Peronis party secured 47% of ballots counted in that country's
Starting point is 00:03:36 biggest province, while President Javier Malé's newly formed La Libertat Avanza Party received just 34% of the votes. At party headquarters, Malay conceded his loss and said, if anyone wants to begin rebuilding and moving forward, the first thing they must do is accept the results. He added they were not positive. We suffered a setback and we must accept it responsible. The $24 million Broadway revival of Cabaret is closing earlier than planned after withdrawal of actor Billy Porter. Said to close on October 19th, it will now close on September 21st. Jeff London reports. The revival, fresh from rave reviews in London, opened in April of 2024 with a record-breaking $24 million price tag, the highest for a Broadway revival.
Starting point is 00:04:26 The August Wilson Theater was extensively. modified into an environmental setting and rebranded the Kit Kat Club. Eddie Redmayne played the MC. But reviews were mixed to negative. The weekly break even was high, and once Redmayne left, ticket sales went down. The final cast replacement in the role was Billy Porter, but he had to withdraw due to sepsis. While Porter is expected to recover, the production is closing at a loss.
Starting point is 00:04:57 For NPR News, I'm Jeff London in New York. And I'm Dwaalisek Hotel.
