The U.S. Supreme Court is giving President Trump the green light to remove a Biden-appointed member of the Federal Trade Commission, despite a 1914 federal law, limiting the president from firing an FTC commissioner without cause.
Chief Justice John Roberts had issued an order to temporarily block a lower court's ruling that reinstated Commissioner Rebecca Kelly Slaughter while her case was litigated.
She and fellow Democratic appointee Alvaro Badoia were dismissed earlier this year.
In Florida, jury selection is underway in the trial of the man charged with attempting to assassinate
then-candid Donald Trump last year. NPR's Greg Allen reports a Secret Service agent says he spotted
Ryan Ruth holding a rifle and fired on him while Trump was golfing at his West Palm Beach Club in September.
A witness says he saw Ruth running from what prosecutors call a sniper's nest in the tree line.
near Trump's golf club in West Palm Beach. Ruth was arrested a short time later,
driving north on the interstate. Ruth faces five charges, including attempting to assassinate
a major presidential candidate, which carries a maximum sentence of life. He'll be representing
himself in court. U.S. District Judge Eileen Cannon granted Ruth's request to dismiss his
federal public defenders, but said they will remain on standby. Last week, Judge Cannon denied
Ruth's request to subpoena President Trump, saying his motion contained, quote, various insults
and no pertinent facts.

Five years ago, the Labor Day wildfires ravaged Oregon, destroying thousands of homes and killing 11 people.
Today, people are still living in hotels and other transitional housing.
Jefferson Public Radio's Jane Vaughn reports.
The Almeida fire in southwestern Oregon destroyed around 2,500 homes on September 8th, 2020.
Most of them were manufactured, and many of the people displaced were older or Spanish speakers.
Mary Martin used to live in a mobile home park.
that burned to the ground. Earlier this year, she finally got a state grant and purchased her
own manufactured home. I have a new spot. I still miss my old spot. A lot. I wish it could
have been the same, but yeah, it's just new. I don't like new. The 2020 wildfire season was the
most destructive on record in the state's history. For NPR News, I'm Jane Vaughn in Ashland, Oregon.

More evidence of a generational shift in tennis, Carlos Alcraz was the winner of the U.S. Open men's tennis tournament.
The 22-year-old Spaniard now has six grand slam titles to his name.
And with the win, he reclaims a world number one ranking by defeating his 24-year-old Italian rival.
And P.R. is Becky Sullivan with details.
Alcarus was on fire at the U.S. Open this year.
He didn't drop a single set on his way to the men's singles final.
There, he met, who else, Janik Senor, the 24-year-old Italian with whom Al-Karez has taken over the world of men's tennis.
In Queens on Sunday, Al-Karez finally lost a set, but only one, ultimately beating Center in four sets, 6-2-36-6-1-6-4.
Between them, Al-Karez and Senor have won every Grand Slam title this year and last.
Before accepting his trophy, Al-Carez first thanked his rival.
I'm seeing you more than my family, so it's Jesus.
So it's, I mean, it's, it's great to share the courts.
The next Grand Slam isn't until January.
That'll be the Australian Open.
That's the only Grand Slam title Alcarez has not yet won in his career.
