Starting point is 00:00:00 Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Dave Mattingley. Leaders of the European Union are condemning the latest Russian air attack on Ukraine. It was the largest aerial assault since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion more than three years ago. As Terry Schultz reports, the Russian airstrikes targeted a Ukrainian government building for the first time. Top officials in the European Union vow quick work on tightening up sanctions against Russia. European Council President Antonio Costa wrote on X, talking about peace while escalating bombings and targeting government buildings and homes, this is Putin's version of peace. EU foreign policy chief Kayakhalis also addressed Putin's seriousness about the peace talks
Starting point is 00:00:44 President Trump is trying to arrange. Every Russian attack is a deliberate choice, Khalis wrote on X, and a message, Russia does not want peace. European Commission Chief Ursula von der Leyen described the Kremlin actions as mocking diplomacy, trampling international law and killing indiscriminately. The bloc aims to approve its 19th sanctions package against Russia this month. For NPR News, I'm Terry Schultz in Brussels. Speaking to reporters yesterday, President Trump said he's ready to impose more sanctions on Moscow.
Starting point is 00:01:16 President Trump says he does not want to go to war with American cities. The president was responding to criticism of his online post about Chicago, where he invoked the Vietnam War film Apocalypse Now. As NPR's Joe Hernandez reports, the president has been suggesting for weeks he intends to deploy National Guard troops to Chicago to combat crime, as he's done in Washington, D.C. On Saturday, Trump posted on Truth Social that Chicago was, quote, about to find out why it's called the Department of War. That's his alternate name for the Department of Defense. When asked Sunday whether he was threatening war with Chicago, Trump said no. We're not going to war. We're going to clean up our city.
Starting point is 00:01:57 We're going to clean them up so they're going to. They don't kill five people every weekend. That's not war. That's common sense. Administration officials have said they may deploy the National Guard to Chicago to help with deportation operations or to combat crime, even though Chicago's mayor says violent crimes, including homicides and shootings, are down. The Trump administration previously deployed National Guard members to Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. Joe Hernandez, NPR News.
Starting point is 00:02:24 Jury selection begins today in South Florida for a man charged with Trump. trying to assassinate then-presidential candidate Donald Trump as he was playing golf. Secret Service agents spotted a gun barrel poking through a perimeter fence of Trump's golf course in West Palm Beach back in September of 2024. That led to the arrest of Ryan Wesley Ruth. About two months earlier, a would-be assassin graze Trump's right ear with a bullet fired from the roof of a building on the perimeter of a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Starting point is 00:03:00 Maryland Governor West Moore says he will not run for the White House in 2028. Moore tells NBC's meet the press. He wants to serve another term as governor and won't be running for president. Moore's name has been floated as a possible contender for the Democratic presidential nomination. Chrysler is recalling one of its most popular SUVs because of a safety defect. NPR's Shandalee's Duster has more. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says more than 90,000 Jeep Grand Cherokees are being recalled because of a software error that could lead to loss of drive power. A safety recall report says, quote, an unexpected loss of propulsion can cause a vehicle crash without prior warning.
Starting point is 00:03:44 The recall includes 22 to 26 plug-in hybrid electric models. Chrysler said in the recall report it was not aware of any. injuries or accidents caused by the defect as of August 18th. Vehicles impacted can be searched by VIN number starting September 11th. Vehicle owners will also be notified by mail in late October. Chandelisse Duster, NPR News. Spain's Carlos Alcarez is this year's U.S. Open men's tennis champion. He defeated Italy's Yonic Center in four sets yesterday to claim his second U.S. Open championship in New York. The victory means Alcares will. will reclaim the world number one ranking on the men's side moving ahead of Sinner. Alcarez is now a six-time Grand Slam champion.
