President Trump says he's not happy about the incident and will have more to say about it on Wednesday. NPR's Mara Liason reports. President Trump said
Starting point is 00:00:41 he wasn't surprised by the Israeli attack on Qatar, a U.S. ally, even though he didn't get a heads up from Israel. I'm not thrilled about the whole situation. It's not a good situation. But I will say this, we want the hostages back. But we are not thrilled about the way that The president spoke outside of Joe's Stonecrab, a fancy restaurant, just a few blocks from the White House. He usually eats at home, but he said the rare outing showed how safe the city had become since he took over D.C.'s police department. He was joined by Vice President J.D. Pritzker says ICE agents have all
Starting point is 00:01:29 already arrived in Illinois to begin immigration sweeps. President Trump says he plans to send National Guard troops to Chicago and other Democratic cities to crack down on illegal immigration and crime. Pritzker says about 100 vehicles are in place and more than 200 federal agents are expected to arrive in his state. This is what Donald Trump is promoting. Ice sitting outside of courthouses that people are showing up to voluntarily. These are not people running away from authority. These are people seeking authority to stay in this country. Prisker's addressed reporters before heading into a roundtable with the Coalition of Immigration and Refugee Groups. In California, Governor Gavin Newsom says his state is under federal siege.
Starting point is 00:02:10 In a pre-recorded state at the state address, Newsom said the nation is at a crossroads with an administration that's threatening democracy. He says there is reason for hope, as many Californians stand up for the ideals that the state and nation were built on. Newsom's remarks came on the 175th anniversary of California. Statehood. Norfolk Southern has agreed to give Amtrak passenger trains priority over its own freight trains under a deal with the Justice Department. Details from NPR's Joe Rose. The Justice Department filed a lawsuit last year accusing Norfolk Southern of causing chronic delays on Amtrak's crescent line between New York City and New Orleans. Federal law says that Amtrak passenger trains are supposed to get priority when they use tracks owned by freight railroads. But in practice, Amtrak has
Starting point is 00:02:57 complained for years that freight lines often prioritize their own trains, which can be difficult to pass because they are frequently a mile or even two miles long. Under the settlement, Norfolk Southern agrees to train its employees to give Amtrak Crescent trains the highest priority and to provide records when those passenger trains are delayed. Joel Rose, NPR News. U.S. futures are flat in after-hours trading. This is NPR. The Polish military is on heightened alert after downing a Russian drone that it says violated its airspace. The Russian drone had been used in a wave of attacks on Ukraine overnight Tuesday. A New York-based nonprofit is launching a school hydroponics program in Alabama.
Starting point is 00:03:40 Students in Birmingham will learn about sustainable food practices and how to combat food deserts in their communities. From member station WBHM, Noel Anonym has the story. Welcome to the Great House. Eighth grader, Tyler Martin, takes a base. seedling from a growing tower. Its roots are tangled in a sponge-like pod of peat. And the water sucks it to that, and it helps the plant grow up. So see how it's starting to grow. Hydroponics requires only water and powdered nutrients to grow plants, no soil.
Starting point is 00:04:09 Manuel Zamora of New York Sunworks says hydroponics preserves both healthy soil and water. You use 90% less water than traditional farming. Therefore, you can really maximize, you know, the growth of certain types of plants and vegetables. She says the project will produce thousands of of food for the local community. For NPR news, I'm Noelle Annen in Birmingham. Legislation to redraw Missouri's congressional map is moving through the state legislature. The redistricting effort comes at the urging of President Trump, who's counting on Republicans in Missouri to retain and possibly gain House seats. The NAACP is suing to halt the special election, which focuses on changing boundaries for a Kansas City district that's held
