The assassin who killed 31-year-old conservative activist Charlie Kirk, as he addressed a crowd at Utah Valley University, remains at large. The FBI is offering a $100,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. Utah Governor Spencer Cox addressed reporters a short time ago. We cannot do our job without the public's help right now. The public has answered our call. for action so far. We've received more than 7,000 leads and tips. I would just note that the FBI
Starting point is 00:00:37 hasn't received this many digital media tips from the public since the Boston Marathon bombing. Cox says forensic evidence collected from the crime scene is being analyzed. He's urging the public to ignore social media bots designed to trigger outrage and violence. Young conservatives are grieving the loss of Charlie Kirk, as NPR's Elena Moore reports. Many of Kirk's followers saw him as an inspiration. Kirk had millions of followers on social media and had become an influential voice in GOP politics. He was also the head of a massive political organizing network and helped some folks decide to run for office themselves. Florida Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna is 36 and says
Starting point is 00:01:19 in many ways she got her start because of Kirk. She used to work for his group Turning Point USA. I am in office and owe my political career to Charlie Kirk. I wish that he was a so that he could help rise up others like me. Kirk had his critics, but within the MAGA movement, he was celebrated. And now, many of his followers are calling for his memory to drive more young people into politics. Elena Moore, NPR News, Washington. The UN Security Council has issued a statement condemning the attack on Qatar. As NPR's Michelle Kellerman reports, the statement makes no mention of Israel,
Starting point is 00:01:55 which says it carried out the strike to target Hamas leaders. A top U.N. official Rosemary DeCarlo says the Israeli strike on Qatar shocked the world. It was an alarming escalation, especially since it targeted individuals who were reportedly gathered to discuss latest U.S. proposal for a ceasefire and hostas release deal in Gaza. U.S. ambassador Dorothy Shea says Qatar has been working very hard and very bravely to broker peace, and she says the unilateral bombing does not advance Israeli or or U.S. goals, but she tried to keep the focus on Hamas, calling on them to release all the hostages they've held for nearly two years. Former Brazilian President Jaya Bolsonaro is facing 27 years in prison after being convicted of plotting a coup following his failed 2022 re-election bid. Bolsonaro is currently under house arrest and his legal team is vowing to appeal. In Washington, President Trump says he was surprised by the outcome of the case. Trump had threatened to increase terrorists on Brazil if Bolsonaro was not acquitted. British ambassador to the U.S. Peter Mendelsohn, has has been fired over his ties to late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Mendelsohn says he regrets falling for Epstein's lives.
Starting point is 00:03:36 His departure comes after the Sun newspaper published emails that Mendelsohn sent to Epstein while the disgrace financier was being prosecuted for sex crimes. Sabrina Carpenter talks this week's Billboard charts, details from NPR Stephen Thompson. This week, the Billboard Albums chart features just one debut in the top 10, man's best friend by Sabrina Carpenter. The album Man's Best Friend Debuts at number one, but Carpenter's success this week runs deeper than that.
