Starting point is 00:00:00 Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Jail Snyder. At the White House a short time ago, President Trump, signed a proclamation making Memphis, the latest Democratic-led city to face a federal crackdown on crime. Today, at the request of Governor Bill Lee of Tennessee, who's standing with us, as you know, I'm signing a presidential memorandum to establish the Memphis Safe Task Force. Trump called the deployment to Memphis of National Guard and Federal and Long. enforcement officers, a replica of his crackdown in Washington, D.C. Memphis is a majority black city. The Memphis Police Department says crime in every major category is down this year
Starting point is 00:00:40 compared to previous years. And the Democratic mayor said Friday that he did not ask for the National Guard. Vice President J.D. Vance hosted the Charlie Kirk show today after Kirk was shot and killed in Utah last week. And Pierce Franco, Ordonia's reports said Vance credited Kirk with helping him become the vice president. Charlie Kirk championed Vance for his Senate bid in 2022 and went on to push for him to become then-candidate Donald Trump's running mate. If it weren't for Charlie Kirk, I would not be the vice president of the United States. The podcast was part tribute and part call to action. The vice president interviewed top officials who credited Kirk with helping secure a big share of the youth vote for Trump.
Starting point is 00:01:22 And Vance promised to target those who, according to the administration, are fueling the kind of violence that resulted in Kirk's death. We're going to go after the NGO network that Fomence, facilitates, and engages in violence. That's not okay. The White House didn't clarify what NGOs he was referring to or how they would target them. Franco, Ordonias, NPR News, the White House. China's government says U.S. chipmaker NVIDIA has violated the country's antitrust law. This comes as negotiators from China and the U.S. wrapped up two days of trade talks in Spain. Here's NPR's John Rewich.
Starting point is 00:01:57 The state administration for market regulation says in a statement, a preliminary investigation has found that NVIDIA broke China's anti-monopoly law. It does not give details, but says the California-based company also violated the regulatory conditions for its 2020 acquisition of a company called Melanox Technologies. The Chinese regulator says it'll investigate further. NVIDIA makes the world's most in-demand chips for the development of artificial intelligence. The U.S. government has banned it from selling China its best chips, though, and the fate of Vida's business in the world's second biggest economy has become a political football as Beijing and

China and the U.S. appear to be getting closer to an agreement that would see the popular social media app TikTok come under U.S. controlled ownership. And for those trade talks in Madrid today, Treasury Secretary Scott Besson, said President Trump and China's leader Xi Jinping are to speak Friday to potentially finalize the deal, Chinese media calling it a basic framework. This is NPR News. A potential strike this week at the nation's largest commuter rail system has been averted. Union officials say they're asking President Trump to intercede by forming an emergency board, which would push the possibility of a work stoppage at the Long Island Railroad out to January at the earliest. The railroad serves nearly 300,000 passengers daily. The Union had threatened to strike as early as Thursday. The daughter, former FBI director James Comey as suing the Justice Department, Marine Comey, who was a highly regarded federal prosecutor in New York, says her dismissal was political and unconstitutional. She's seeking reinstatement, back pay, and damages. Comey became an assistant U.S. attorney in 2015. Her lawsuit says she successfully prosecuted hundreds of cases and that she was notified of her dismissal by email. Topical magnesium, a popular health trend. Many social media influencers claim it improved sleep. But there's little evidence to support the fat. Here's NPR's Kedia-Riddle reporting.
Starting point is 00:03:59 Magnesium supplements have long been thought to be helpful for sleep, though there isn't much science to support this claim. There's even less evidence that magnesium lotion would promote sleep, despite what many TikTokers would have people believe. John Winkleman is a sleep specialist at Harvard. He says he has never recommended any kind of magnesium for sleep. I'm a great believer in scientific evidence, and if somebody making a claim that something works, I'm going to say prove it.
Starting point is 00:04:28 That says, says Winkleman, if magnesium lotion is working for you, there's probably very little harm in using it. Katie Riddle, NPR News. And I'm Jail Snyder. This is NPR News from Washington.
