Starting point is 00:00:00 Live from NPR News, I'm Giles Snyder. New York City police arrested more than 100 people outside the UN headquarters Thursday. Walter Wuthman, a member station WNYC, reports on the protests against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's speech to the General Assembly. Hundreds of protesters shut down traffic at a major intersection near the UN headquarters. Dozens then refused police orders to leave the area, including Dari Elisa Chivalier, a Democratic socialist. socialist in the nominee for an Upper Manhattan congressional seat. Somebody, if it won't be our presidential administration or other elected officials, needs to know that accountability must happen, that you cannot enact a genocide and walk freely through the streets of New York. The Israeli leader used his speech to dismiss accusations of genocide. Many of those arrested are political allies of Mayor Zoran Mamdani, whom Netanyahu

NPR's Brian Mann is following the return to the White House of reporters from CNN, MS now, and Politico. After a federal judge temporarily blocked President Trump's attempt to ban them. He has more on Trump's reaction to the decision. Writing on his truth social platform, Trump again accused U.S. journalists without offering evidence of conspiring to make up false stories about him. Starting point is 00:01:42 Reporters from all three outlets said the White House continued to block them from the grounds before access was granted after a few hours. And journalists for CNN and MS Now say they were denied entry to cover Thursday evening state dinner for Chinese leader Xi Jinping. Trump and Chi are to wrap up their meetings with a visit to the National Archives today. The Navy says eight sailors attempted suicide during the 10-month tour of the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Group. NPR's Quill Lawrence reports the ships are en route home from the Middle East. Family members of U.S. sailors first warned about conditions on the aircraft carrier during what became a modern record for days at sea. At the time, Secretary of Defense Pete Heseth dismissed the reports and President Trump said the ship's tour had been, quote, not nearly long enough.
Starting point is 00:02:28 But in a letter responding to New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, the Navy revealed that eight sailors had attempted suicide during the deployment, including one who jumped overboard. Jillabrand accused the president of treating the sailors with open disrespect. CENTCOM commander Admiral Brad Cooper has said that the Lincoln had a relatively low rate of mental health cases, but acknowledged the stress of such a long time at sea. Quill Lawrence NPR News. Starting point is 00:03:06 Dr. Heidi Overton took question Thursday from senators who will vote on her nomination, saying that FDA-approved vaccines remain safe and effective. As a White House advisor, Overton has worked on Trump administration health efforts, including a plan to break up decades-old combination vaccines for children. Overton also faced questions about the FDA's oversight of the abortion pill, Miffipristone, and food safety. With the Major League Baseball playoffs just around the corner, the Chicago White Sox made baseball history Thursday afternoon when they beat the Kansas City Royals 9 to 1.

Before this season, it was rough for two years when the Chicago White Sox lost more than 100 games in back-to-back seasons, but they became the first team in baseball history to bounce back from two straight 100 lost seasons and qualify. for the playoffs. White Sox manager, Will Venable, says he appreciates the historical significance. It means a lot. I think it means even more just knowing where the organization was at a couple years ago. The playoff seedings will be determined after this weekend, the final weekend of the regular season. The White Sox can include their schedule at home against Colorado. For NPR News,
