Starting point is 00:00:00 This is Eric Glass. On this American Life, we like stories that surprise you. For instance, imagine finding a new hobby and realizing... To do this hobby right, according to the ways of the masters, there's a pretty good chance that you're going to have to bend the law to get the materials that you need. If not, break it. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:00:18 To break international laws. Your life stories, really good ones. This American Life. Live from NPR News, I'm Dale Wilman. President Trump is scheduled to meet Monday with... top congressional leaders from both parties. As NPR's Claudia Grisales reports, the meeting will take place one day
Starting point is 00:00:35 before the government is set to shut down without a bipartisan budget deal in place. After President Trump canceled a meeting with Democratic leaders last week, he's now agreed to a new meeting. Senate Majority Leader John Thune, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, House Speaker Mike Johnson,
Starting point is 00:00:52 and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries are set to visit with the president. Democrats have said they need stopgap legislation to address Affordable Care Act subsidies that are set to expire by years end. Schumer and Jeffrey said in a joint statement they are resolute in avoiding a shutdown while also addressing the rising health care prices. Both said they want to negotiate it by partisan spending agreement that, quote, meets the needs of the American people. Claude Risales, NPR News.
Starting point is 00:01:25 At least four people have died following intense flooding in parts of Arizona this week. and at least two other people are still missing. The city of Globe, Arizona, declared a state of emergency after about 1,000 propane tanks washed away from a distribution center and caused a major concern downtown. Local business owner Paul Kempton says his physical therapy office appears to have been totally destroyed by the high waters. It's about three inches full of mud and water about halfway up the wall
Starting point is 00:01:53 and all the equipment has been underwater. Oh, my goodness. And so to us, it looks like a complete lot. On Friday, more than 200 flights were canceled at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport. Iran has recalled its ambassadors to Britain, France, and Germany overmose by those countries to reinstate international sanctions over the regime's nuclear pursuits. As Terry Schultz reports, sanctions are back in effect after a last-ditch effort by China and Russia to prevent them failed.
Starting point is 00:02:21 The Iranian regime called the decision to restore UN Security Council sanctions against Iran irresponsible. A month ago, Britain, France, and Germany warned Iran snapback sanctions would apply if Tehran did not take steps to halt its nuclear program, including the resumption of cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency, part of the 2015 deal under which Iran agreed to curtail its advancement. President Trump pulled the U.S. out of that agreement in 2018. China and Russia proposed an extension of the moratorium, but it failed to get support. The sanctions include an embargo on conventional weapons, a global asset freeze, and travel bans on Iranian officials. For NPR News, I'm Terry Schultz.
Starting point is 00:03:01 President Trump says he's sending troops to Portland, Oregon soon, and he says he's authorizing full force if necessary to handle what he calls domestic terrorists there. But Oregon's Democratic governor says Trump is abusing his authority by ordering troops into a city, she says, is doing just fine on its own. The city's police says the city is doing well. This is NPR News. Eight former death row prisoners have been transferred to the most restrictive facility in the U.S. prison system. As George Hale from Member Station, WFIU reports, President Biden had reduced their federal death sentences to life without parole. Trump blasted Biden's decision and ordered the Justice Department to house the prisoners under conditions reflecting the, quote, monstrosity of their crimes.
Starting point is 00:03:47 Now the U.S. Prison Bureau is relocating eight of them to ADX, Florence, the harshest prison in the federal system. Attorneys argue the move amounts to collective punishment for Biden's decision, something none of the prisoners had any control over. Inmate location records show that of the eight men now at ADX, six were sentenced to death for killing fellow prisoners and guards in Texas and West Virginia. The eighth prisoner, Edward Fields, is a former Oklahoma prison guard. All were being held at a U.S. prison in Indiana where the first Trump administration carried out a record-breaking 13 executions. For NPR News, I'm George Hale in Bloomington, Indiana. There were some upsets at the top of college football Saturday, number six, Oregon beat number three Penn State and double overtime, 30 to 24. Number 4 LSU lost to number 13 Mississippi 24 to 19, and Ty Simpson passed for 276 yards and two touchdowns, and ran for another score as number 5, Georgia, lost to number 17, Alabama.
Starting point is 00:04:45 Fernando Mendoza, meanwhile, threw a 49-yard touchdown pass with less than two minutes to play in the game to give number 11 Indiana a 2. 20 to 15 win over Iowa, and Arkansas Pine Bluff beat Alcorn State 24 to 20.
