Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Jail Snyder. President Trump is scheduled to meet tomorrow with top congressional leaders from both parties.
Starting point is 00:00:34 A meeting will take place one day before the deadline to fund government operations or face a partial shutdown, as NPR's Claudia Grasales reports. After President Trump canceled a meeting with Democratic leaders last week, he's now agreed to a new meeting. Senate Majority Leader John Thune, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, House Speaker Mike Johnson, and House Minority Leader, Hakeemper, Hakeemper, Hakeemps, are set to visit with the president. Democrats have said they need stopgap legislation to address Affordable Care Act subsidies that are set to expire by years end. Schumer and Jeffrey said in a joint statement they are resolute in avoiding a shutdown while also addressing the rising health care prices. Both said they want to negotiate a bipartisan spending agreement that, quote, meets the needs of the American people. Claude Riesales, NPR News.
Starting point is 00:01:27 Top officials in Oregon are pushing back against President Trump's announcement that he will send troops to Portland on social media this weekend. Trump called Portland war ravaged and said troops were necessary to protect immigration facilities from protesters. Oregon's governor says Trump is abusing his authority. UN sanctions on Iran have come into force for the first time since 2015. The sanctions include a ban on uranium enrichment and an arms embargo reimposed after Western power. accused Iran of not meeting its nuclear obligations. Here's the BBC's Barry Caffery reporting. The sanctions coming just three months after Israel and the United States bombed Iran
Starting point is 00:02:09 ban dealings related to Tehran's nuclear and ballistic missiles program, but are also expected to have wider effects on its economy. The U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, urged Tehran to accept direct talks and called on UN member states to immediately implement the sanctions. The British, French and German foreign ministers said in a joint statement that they would continue to seek a new diplomatic solution to ensure Iran never gets a nuclear weapon. Starting point is 00:02:46 is keeping tabs on a tropical depression that could strengthen into tropical storm Imelda later today and potentially a hurricane by Tuesday. Even though this has not formed yet, we are treating it as if we're expecting some kind of impact. Tropical storm watches up along the southeast coast with the Caroliners preparing for potential impact. That storm currently dumping heavy rain over portions of eastern Cuba and the Bahamas. State of emergency also in effect in Arizona where flooding devastated a rural mining town east of Phoenix. Four people were killed and crews are searching for the missing.

An intensifying typhoon is forecast to make landfall today. Heavy rain began drenching the region last night. This storm is the second major storm to threaten Asia over the past week. Board members of Iowa's largest school district have placed Superintendent Ian Roberts on paid leave. The Des Moines School Board met this weekend a day after Roberts was arrested by federal immigration, agents who say he was subject to a final removal order issued last year.
Starting point is 00:03:58 The school board says Robert's arrest on Friday made for a jarring day, but that the board still does not have all the facts. England's national team has won the women's rugby World Cup final to beating Canada this weekend 33 to 13. But as Vicki Barker reports from London, the real winner was women's rugby itself. 15 years ago, the women's rugby World Cup final was played in a small stadium in front of just 13,000 spectators. On Saturday, a capacity crowd of close to 82,000 packed Twickenham Stadium considered the home of English rugby breaking all records for the women's sport. Mo Hunt, who plays scrum
