President Trump outlined a peace plan to end the war in Gaza Monday after hosting a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu. But NPR's Tamara Keith reports that it is not a done deal yet. The plan calls for the release of the hostages, demilitarization of Gaza, and rebuilding overseen by a board of peace led by Trump.

Trump said he has the backing of. of leaders in the region and, quote, I'm hearing that Hamas wants to get this done. Congressional leaders of both parties left a meeting with President Trump Monday without agreeing on a plan to avert a government shutdown this week. Senate Majority Leader John Thune says Democrats are not willing to compromise.
Starting point is 00:01:34 We are willing to sit down and work with them on some of the issues they want to talk about, whether it's the extension of premium tax credits with reforms. We're happy to have that conversation. But as of right now, this is a hijacking all the American people, and it's the American people who are going to pay the price. Houseman Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffrey says his party is insisting on one issue. We're deadly serious about a addressing the Republican-caused health care crisis because it's a deadly, serious issue for the American people. Jeffrey says more than 20 million Americans will face sharply higher health care costs if Republicans do not deal with expiring Affordable Care Act tax credits.
Starting point is 00:02:15 After meeting with congressional leaders, President Trump posted an AI-generated video on social media, depicting a profane Chuck Schumer complaining about Democrats. The video also shows Jeffrey's wearing a sombrero and a mustache. Investigators are seeking a motive for Sunday's mass shooting and arson at a church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Chapel in Michigan. The gunman killed four people and injured eight others, as Michigan public Sarah Swick reports. Thomas Jacob Sanford drove a pickup truck into morning services at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Chapel in Grand Blank, Michigan Sunday morning. He shot at worshippers while also setting the church ablaze. Sanford was shot and killed by responding officers.
Starting point is 00:02:56 William Rennie is the Grand Blank Township Police Chief. He says the fire largely destroyed the church. We have not completed search in the church, but as we know, everyone has been accounted for. Authorities would not comment on Sanford's potential motive. Sanford was a 40-year-old Marine veteran who served in Iraq. Police say he had a criminal record for burglary and drunk driving. For NPR news, I'm Sarah Swick. This is NPR.
Starting point is 00:03:23 Iowa's largest school district has revoked the license of Des Moines Superintendent Ian Roberts, saying he is no longer a legal U.S. resident. The Guyana native was also suspended on Monday days after being arrested by immigration officers. The Department of Homeland Security says Roberts came to the U.S. on a student visa in 1999 and had an outstanding weapons charge. DHS says he evaded a deportation order last year. President Trump has threatened to impose 100 percent. terrorists on movies that are made outside of the U.S. California Governor Gammon Newsom calls the idea, quote, 100% stupid. On truth social, Trump said, quote, our movie making business has been stolen from the United States of America by other countries, just like stealing candy from a baby, end quote. He called California's Governor Newsom, weak and incompetent, and said 100% tariffs would solve what the president called a long-time never-ending problem. The statement was part of a flurry of posts on a variety of issues, including the NFL and domestic furniture production. Netta Ulibe, NPR News.
