President Trump is using the government shutdown to punish and pressure his political opponents. Details from NPR Sprinkel Ordonias. The president is calling on Republicans to use the shutdown to, quote, clear out dead wood.
Starting point is 00:00:43 He says billions of dollars can be saved. And Trump is sitting down with his budget director, Russ, vote, to determine which of the many, quote, democratic agencies may be cut. Trump writes in a social media post, I can't believe the radical left Democrat. gave me this unprecedented opportunity. Trump even cited votes work on the controversial Project 2025, where he advocated for a more activist approach to cutting spending and overhauling the federal workforce. The White House is pushing Democrats to negotiate,
Starting point is 00:01:17 but votes work shows he's less concerned about Democrats and more focused on making the cuts. Franco Ordonez, NPR News. An immigration judge has denied asylum for kill Omar Obraco Garcia, the Maryland man who was once wrongfully deported to El Salvador. NPR's Jasmine Guards reports that Abrago Garcia has 30 days to appeal. Abrago Garcia's lawyers filed to reopen his asylum, Clay's claiming he now qualifies since he was sent out to El Salvador and later returned to the U.S. That motion was denied on Wednesday for several reasons, including that the judge found Abrago Garcia was not singled out by guards while in detention.
Starting point is 00:01:56 In 2019, Obrigo Garcia requested asylum, but was not a judge. eligible because over a year had passed since he'd entered the U.S. illegally. Still, a judge ruled that he could not be sent to El Salvador because his family was the target of gang violence there. Nevertheless, in March of this year, he was detained and deported to El Salvador. A Supreme Court ruling got him returned to the U.S. The Trump administration then accused him of human trafficking to which he has pled not guilty. Jasmine Garst and PR News, New York. A motorist rammed a car into pedestrians outside his synagogue in Manchester. England Thursday, and fatally stabbed two bystanders.
Starting point is 00:02:33 The attack occurred on the holiest day of the year in Judaism. Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham tells the BBC that police fatally shot one suspect at the scene. It is a serious incident, but at the same time I can give some reassurance immediately to people that the immediate danger appears to be over, and Greater Manchester Police have dealt with it very quickly and has been amazing support from, I think, members of the public and security at the location. The slain suspect was identified as 35-year-old Britain, Jehahad al-Shame. Three others were arrested on suspicion of terrorism. President Trump says drug cartels are unlawful combatants and the U.S. is in armed conflict.
Starting point is 00:03:14 The message follows three recent U.S. strikes on boats in the Caribbean. The administration says the boats were hauling drugs to the U.S. This is NPR. The South African government, government is calling for the release of three citizens detained by Israeli forces that intercepted an aid flotilla that was headed for Gaza. The Israeli Navy stormed the vessels and seized the activists involved, including the grandson of Nelson Mandela. Israel says that the activist had been advised to change course. New Mexico lawmakers have wrapped up their
Starting point is 00:03:45 two-day special session held in response to federal budget cuts. From member station KUNM, Jeanette Didios has details on the initiatives that were approved for funding. With a Democratic majority in both houses, New Mexico lawmakers passed five bills totaling $100 million in state funds to help replace funding for programs cut in this summer's so-called Big Beautiful Bill. Republican leadership criticized the Democrats saying they shut them out of the legislative process. One of the most prominent state bills will provide funds for expired tax credits to maintain health insurance coverage if the U.S. Supreme Court repeals the federal affordable care. Act. And the state's Department of Health will have expanded authority to issue vaccine policies for schools and daycares. And to buy more COVID-19 vaccines for children and adults.
