In the U.S., national security news can feel far away from daily life.
Distant wars, murky conflicts, diplomacy behind closed doors on our new show, Sources and Methods.
NPR reporters on the ground bring you stories of real people, helping you understand why distant events matter here at home.
Listen to sources and methods on the NPR app or wherever you get your podcasts.
Live from NPR News, I'm Dale Wilman.
California Governor Gavin Newsom says he'll sue to get the Trump administration to return 300 of the state's National Guard members now being sent to Oregon.
Newsom calls the deployment reckless and authoritarian.
Sarah Hussaini from member station KQED reports.
Newsom announced that the Trump administration was sending the California National Guard troops,
both in a post on the website, X, and in a statement.
Newsom says California's troops were placed under Trump's control months ago in response to unrest.
in Los Angeles, and are now being used as a political weapon against Americans.
He also announced his intentions to sue. In response, a White House spokesperson says President
Trump has exercised his lawful authority to protect federal assets and personnel in Portland from
so-called violent riots. It comes one day after a Trump-appointed federal judge temporarily
blocked the president's effort to call up 200 of Oregon's own National Guard,
calling it unjustified.

In Norfolk, Virginia, President Trump addressed sailors
celebrating the 250th birthday of the U.S. Navy on Sunday.
Steve Walsh, with member station WHRO in Norfolk, has our story.
Before a backdrop of two Navy warships,
President Trump reiterated that he planned to rid the military of so-called
wokenness at a 250th anniversary celebration of the Navy in Norfolk.
Mirroring comments he made before a group of
top military leaders Tuesday.
I don't know that it was ever really here.
I think some of the top people had it.
I knew a few of them.
They were really, they were major losers.
Trump also defended the actions of National Guard troops in Washington, D.C.
While the crowd waited, the president was taken to the carrier USS George H.W. Bush
to witness a Navy flotilla that included eight destroyers and five missile launches.

At least five people were killed and more than a dozen.
dozen others injured after Russia launched a large-scale drone and missile attack on Ukraine
overnight. MPR's Joanna Kikis reports from Kiv that most of those killed were in Ukraine's
far west, which borders the NATO country of Poland. The Russian attacks also caused a fire
at an industrial park in the western region of Leviv, as well as power cuts in some districts.
The mayor of the city of Leviv said there were no military targets in the area. Russia's
Airstrikes also hit the southeastern Ukrainian city of Zaporizia, according to the regional governor.
Apartment buildings and an industrial enterprise were hit.
At least one person was killed and at least 10 injured.
The attacks come a day after Russian drone strikes killed a French photojournalist in eastern Ukraine.
A Ukrainian photographer was badly injured in the same strike.

Israel and Hamas are holding indirect talks in Egypt on Monday,
and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says a hostage release could be announced this week.
Tuesday is the second anniversary of the Hamas attack on Israel that sparked the war.
Israeli strikes continue in Gaza, meanwhile, despite President Trump telling Israel to end the bombing.
A prominent medical publisher has retracted a study suggesting apple cider vinegar can help people lose weight.
And Pierce John Hamilton reports.
The study was published by the BMJ Group.
in March of 2024.
It looked at 120 overweight or obese people in Lebanon.
Those who got daily doses of apple cider vinegar for three months
reportedly lost about 9% of their initial body weight.
News outlets around the world covered the research.
Within weeks, though, scientists began posting critique
saying the results were implausible and marred by errors.
Then they took their concerns to the editors of the journal,
BMJ Nutrition Prevention and Health.
The paper was retracted in September of this year,
Apple cider vinegar remains a popular remedy, though, thanks to endorsements from celebrities including Kim Kardashian, Katie Perry, and Dr. Memad Oz.

Given a track record, it's likely no surprise that the box office release of Taylor Swift's movie,
the official release party of a showgirl, was number one this weekend.
It features music videos and behind-the-scenes footage, and it brought in $33 million at North American theaters.
One battle after another, meanwhile, fell to second with $11.1 million in sales during.
its second week of release, and the drama of The Smashing Machine finished in third with
$6 million. I'm Dale Wilman, NPR News.
