In the U.S., national security news can feel far away from daily life.
Distant wars, murky conflicts, diplomacy behind closed doors on our new show, Sources and Methods.
NPR reporters on the ground bring you stories of real people, helping you understand why distant events matter here at home.

A federal judge in Oregon has temporarily blocked President Trump from sending National Guard troops to Portland from Oregon Public Broadcasting.
Joni Audenland reports.
President Trump has said that violent protests outside the Portland Ice Building left the city, quote, war ravaged and threatened the safety of federal employees.
But Judge Karen Immigate, a Trump appointee, said on her ruling that protest had generally been peaceful since June, with fewer than 20 protesters on average.
Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield celebrated the decision in a press conference and called it a healthy check on the president's power.
No president is allowed to make up facts or rely on social media trolling or posts when deploying the United States military in our cities.
The judge could extend a restraining order on October 17th.

Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker says he was given an ultimatum this weekend to either
call up National Guard troops or the Trump administration will. The White House says President Trump
has authorized 300 guard troops to be sent to Chicago, where a woman was treated at a hospital
and released after being shot by a Border Patrol agent. Officials say she was armed and tried
to run over immigration officers. As Israel and Hamas seemed to be moving forward on President
Trump's proposed peace plan for Gaza, special envoy Steve Whitkoff, is leading an American delegation
to Egypt for indirect talks tomorrow.
President Trump has called on Israel to stop shelling Gaza, but there have been more Israeli strikes this weekend, and Pierre's Kerry Kahn is in Tel Aviv.
The Israeli Army said it has moved its troop to a defensive only position, according to an official not authorized to speak on the record.
We did ask the military about the continuing airstrikes, particularly that one that killed 17 people.
They said they were targeting a Hamas militant and are investigating reports of civilian casualties.

has taken the top spot in Saturday's Czech elections. Terry Schultz reports on what this victory
may bring for the European Union and NATO. Populist ex-prime minister, Andre Babisch, has made a political
comeback with his party winning more than a third of the votes cast in a two-day election for
parliament. Bobbisch, who even adopted a maga-like red baseball cap with white lettering for the
campaign, has pledged to reduce his country's support for Ukraine and to oppose some EU policies
on migration and environmental protection.
Center-right Prime Minister Petrofiela conceded defeat but vowed continued activism.
I will not give up the fight against populism and extremism, who told supporters, I'm not giving up the fight.
A Czech online research group found hundreds of anonymous TikTok accounts were getting millions of views for pro-Russian anti-government posts in the run-up to the vote.

as it scrambled warplanes early today to protect its airspace after Russia launched another
round of air strikes on Ukraine. The Western Lvivib region was hit hard, Libby borders Poland,
and officials say at least four people were killed there. A fifth person was killed in the southern
city of Saperichu. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said today that Moscow sent more than 50
ballistic missiles and nearly 500 drones and attacks that span nine Ukrainian regions. All of Ukraine was

to issue new guidelines on how to respond to postpartum hemorrhage or excessive bleeding
after childbirth. In Beers-Gabriella Emmanuelo reports this is one of the leading causes of
maternal mortality around the world. Each year, millions of women experience postpartum hemorrhage
and 45,000 of them die from it. The new guidelines were issued by the World Health Organization,
the International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics
and the International Confederation of Midwives.
The guidelines represent a major shift
in how the condition is diagnosed and treated,
including significantly lowering the threshold
of how much blood is lost before action is taken.
The goal is earlier detection and quicker response.
