A federal judges temporarily blocked the Trump administration from deploying any National Guard units to Oregon. California and Oregon had sought the restraining order after the Trump administration sent guard troops from California to Oregon on Sunday. Trump says the city of Portland is crime-ridden and troops are needed to protect federal property.
Starting point is 00:00:47 But Oregon, Governor Tina Kotech says Trump has no idea what Portland is really like. The facts on the ground in Oregon haven't changed. There's no need for military intervention in Oregon. There's no insurrection in Portland. There's no threat to natural security. Oregon is our home. It is not a military target. And Oregonians exercising their freedom of speech against unlawful actions by the Trump administration is their right and should be done so peacefully.
Starting point is 00:01:11 The Trump administration says Hamas has accepted its plan to release Israeli hostages. The announcement came before a Sunday night deadline imposed by President Trump. As NPR's Luke Garrett reports, talks continue on who will govern gossip after the war. Secretary of State Marco Rubio says nothing. is guaranteed, but he celebrated President Trump's peace plan. Here's Rubio on Fox News. Hamas has accepted the entire construct of President Trump's proposal for releasing the hostages. This plan has Hamas releasing all remaining 48 hostages in exchange for nearly 2,000 Palestinians. Rubio says he is confident in this first phase, but the second
Starting point is 00:01:46 portion, deciding who will govern Gaza after the war, that is still under negotiation. We've got a general outlines of it, and which Hamas is generally accepted, though not entirely. some of it is going to have to be discussed, moving back and forth. In Trump's 20-point plan, Hamas has no role in governing Gaza, and it allows for a Palestinian state. Luke Garrett and PR News, Washington. British police and the British government are tiring of what has become weekly demonstrations of civil disobedience. Now, Vicki Barker reports from London that they're being given more power to restrict certain protesters. Once again, on Saturday, London police officers carry demonstrators from their
Starting point is 00:02:25 silent sit-in supporting the band group Palestine action to sympathetic applause. It takes five officers to carry away each protester, each protester trying to make the process of arrest as slow and laborious as possible. Now, forces in multiple cities say their officers are exhausted and spread thin with security beefed up outside synagogues and Jewish schools following last week's synagogue attack. So the British government says it's going to give police more powers to put conditions on repeat protests, possibly moving them to more containable locations. And as Kirk Carrapeza from member station GBAH in Boston reports, a new study finds that families are confused about the real cost of college. Tuition discounting is the practice private colleges have long used to manage revenue, cut in
Starting point is 00:03:47 cost for some students while keeping a higher sticker price for others. Now the Strata Education Foundation reports public universities facing funding caps and enrollment declines are adopting the same approach. In the past decade, the share of undergrads at public four-year schools receiving aid rose from 49 to 62%. Average discount rates also jumped from 24 to 31%. The result?
