In the U.S., national security news can feel far away from daily life.
Distant wars, murky conflicts, diplomacy behind closed doors.
On our new show, Sources and Methods.
NPR reporters on the ground bring you stories of real people,
helping you understand why distant events matter here at home.
Listen to sources and methods on the NPR app or wherever you get your podcasts.
Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Corva Coleman.
Late last night, a federal judge in Oregon issued a seven.
second order blocking President Trump from deploying any National Guard troops to Oregon.
It's the second ruling this weekend on the issue from the same judge, and it comes after Trump
ordered troops from Oregon and California to deploy to Oregon. He's also ordered National Guard
troops from Texas to go to Illinois. Illinois Democratic Governor J.B. Pritzker is calling these
deployments, quote, Trump's invasion. From member station W.B.B.E.Z in Chicago, Arice L. Gomez-Aldana
reports Pritzkerp has resisted other demands by Trump.
The governor also refused to activate Illinois National Guard troops,
even after the White House gave him what he called an ultimatum,
saying, call up your troops or we will.
And on Sunday, after learning about Trump's move to send Texas National Guard to Chicago,
Pritzer called it, quote, madness and asked Texas Governor Greg Abbott to refuse.
In the meantime, the U.S. Border Patrol agents have been patrolling downtown Chicago
wearing tactical gear and carrying long guns and making arrests.
Ocelli Gomez-Aldana reporting.
Ballots for California's special election are being mailed out today.
Voters will weigh in on a ballot measure that would let state officials redraw California's
congressional map ahead of elections this year.
NPR's Ashley Lopez has more.
Proposition 50 in California is a response to Texas lawmakers who redrew the state's congressional
map recently to create five more favorable seats for Republicans.
Texas lawmakers took on this effort at the request of President Trump, who wants Republicans
to keep control of Congress next year.
California Democrats led by Governor Gavin Newsom vowed to counter Texas' redistricting effort
by creating five more favorable congressional seats for Democrats in the state.
But unlike Texas, California has an independent redistricting commission,
so lawmakers have to ask voters for permission first to bypass the independent commission
that voters in California approved in 2008 and 2010.

The new parent company of CBS has hired Free Press, founder,
Barry Weiss as the editor-in-chief of its news division. Skydance Media is also set to acquire
her center-right news site known for its sharp criticism of the news media as liberal.
NPR's David Fulkenflick reports.
In recent months, the former and new ownership of CBS have announced a series of moves,
the cancellation of Stephen Colbert's late night show, which often satirized President Trump,
paying Trump $16 million to settle his lawsuit over a 60-minute interview of then-Vice
President Kamala Harris last year, naming a conservative former think tank chief to be an
ombudsman. Now, Barry Weiss arrives as a top executive. She is to work in partnership with
CBS News President Tom Zabrowski. She has no experience in broadcast and is unlikely to direct
logistics, but Weiss is to have the remit to reshape journalistic sensibilities at the network
of Edward R. Murrow and Walter Cronkite. David Fulkenflick and PR News. This is NPR.
This is day six of the federal government's shutdown. Republican and Democratic lawmakers are
trading blame for the situation. Republicans are demanding that Democrats agree to a short-term
spending bill to reopen the government. Democrats say Republicans need to first restore funding
cut from federal health programs. President Trump is also blaming Democrats. He says he has
started to lay off federal workers, although this hasn't been confirmed yet. The Israeli Foreign
Ministry reports that
activist Greta Toonberg and scores of others have been deported. Israel detained them as they
tried to deliver aid to Gaza. Terry Schultz reports. Swedish foreign minister Maria Stenegarde
tells the TT News Service she's received reports that 22-year-old Greta Tunberg has been
treated badly by Israeli personnel. Italian journalist Lorenzo Dugastino, who was held with
Tunberg, says he saw it happen. She was humiliated and wrapped in an Israeli flag and exhibited like a trophy.
I had the feeling of being in a really barbaric place.
Denregard reminds Israel that, quote,
need for food and water must be met,
and that all those detained must be allowed to meet with a legal representative if they wish.
Israel denies Tunberg has been mistreated.

has been awarded to three scientists.
They include Americans Mary Brunco and Fred Ramsdale,
as well as Japan's Shimon Sakaguchi.
The scientists are being honest.
