After two years of war in Gaza, President Trump says Israel and Hamas have agreed to the first phase of his 20-point peace plan. It follows three days of indirect talks in Egypt. The announcement was welcomed by the families of the remaining hostages held by Hamas, as well as the U.N. Secretary General.

It begins with Hamas releasing all remaining hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners, but also includes a long-term plan to rebuild. Trump says he could travel to the region as early as this weekend, and he's not ruling out a visit to Gaza. I may do that. We haven't decided exactly I'll be going to Egypt, most likely. That's where everybody is gathered right now,

President Trump hosted a roundtable event at the White House yesterday, where the focus was the leftist movement known as Antifa. As NPR's Franco-Ordoñez reports, the president has designated Antifa as a domestic terror organization. President Trump was joined by Attorney General Pambandi and Homeland Security Secretary Christy Knoem, along with several conservative independent journalists who shared their stories of confrontations with demonstrators that they refer to as Intifah. It should be clear to all Americans that we have a very serious left-wing terror threat in our
Starting point is 00:02:21 country, radicals associated with the domestic terror group, Antifa. Last month, Trump signed. in order to crack down on left-wing groups after the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, including targeting those who financially support them. Some studies show there has been an increase in left-wing attacks in the U.S., but they remain much lower than historical levels of right-wing violence. A federal judge is expected to hear arguments today in a lawsuit filed by the state of Illinois and the city of Chicago to block President Trump from deploying National Guard troops to the Windy City to combat crime.
Starting point is 00:03:03 The governor and Chicago's mayor call that deployment unnecessary and illegal. This is day nine of the government shutdown with no end in sight. Short-term Republican and Democratic spending bills in the Senate once again were unable to get the 60 votes needed for passage yesterday. This is NPR News from Washington. Authorities in Southern California say they've made it arrest in connection with the Palisades fire that ravaged the Los Angeles area back in January. As Steve Futterman reports, the arson destroyed about 6,800 homes and other structures and left
Starting point is 00:03:40 a dozen people dead. Officials say the suspect, who was an Uber driver, maliciously set a fire on January 1st that was never completely extinguished, and the following week reignited as the Palisades fire. Bill Isley is the acting U.S. Attorney in L.A. The fire continued to smolder and burn underground until on January 7th, heavy winds caused this underground fire to surface. Authorities say the suspect may have had an unusual interest in fires. He created AI images of a city burning and repeatedly played a French rap song whose video depicted a trash can being said ablaze. For NPR News, I'm Steve Fetterman in Los Angeles.
Starting point is 00:04:23 The last of 10 escapees from a jail in New Orleans has been recaptured. Authorities say 28-year-old Derek Groves was found hiding in a crawl space beneath a home in Atlanta, five months after the group of inmates escaped through a hole in a wall behind a toilet at the jail. Groves had been convicted of murder and was facing a potential life sentence. Atlanta's deputy police chief says Groves was located by a police dog. The New York Yankees have been eliminated from the Major League Baseball Playoffs, the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Yankees five to two yesterday to win the American League Divisional Series three games to one.
