Starting point is 00:00:00 In the U.S., national security news can feel far away from daily life. Distant wars, murky conflicts, diplomacy behind closed doors. On our new show, Sources and Methods. NPR reporters on the ground bring you stories of real people, helping you understand why distant events matter here at home. Listen to sources and methods on the NPR app or wherever you get your podcasts. Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Corva Coleman. This year's Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded.
Starting point is 00:00:30 The chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Yergen Votnus Friedness, announced the news. The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the Nobel Peace Prize for 2025 to Maria Corina Machado. She is receiving the Nobel Peace Prize for her tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve. achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy. Machado is a 58-year-old industrial engineer. She is living and hiding in Venezuela. She was blocked last year by Venezuelan courts from running for president against current leaders Nicolas Maduro. Maduro claimed a landslide victory last year in his re-election campaign. That was a vote that election observers rejected is neither free nor fair.
Starting point is 00:01:28 Today is supposed to mark the start of the first phase of a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. It is based on a plan proposed by President Trump. It calls for Hamas to release all hostages, living and dead, and for Israel to free hundreds of Palestinian prisoners and detainees. Israel is also supposed to pull troops back from zones in Gaza. But NPR's Greg Myrie says the timeline for that is unclear. Israel has agreed to pull back in phases that will initially move out of places like Gaza City and other Palestinian population centers. Now, they're eventually
Starting point is 00:02:04 supposed to retreat to a buffer zone along the Gaza border, but still on the Gaza side of the border. Hamas had always demanded a full withdrawal of Israeli troops, but they just didn't have the leverage in these negotiations with Israeli troops in Gaza. It wouldn't take much to restart hostilities. NPR's Greg Myrie reporting. A federal judge in Chicago has temporarily blocked the National Guard from being deployed in Illinois. And Pierre Servio Martinez Beltran has more. Federal Judge April Perry says deploying National Guard troops in Illinois would only add fuel to the fire. Under her ruling, the National Guard of the U.S. cannot be deployed within the state. The block will be in effect for 14 days. An appeal by the Trump administration is almost guaranteed.
Starting point is 00:02:49 The Trump administration has said the National Guard is needed to protect an immigration processing facility outside of Chicago and protect ICE agents as they conduct arrests. Trump has said Chicago is a war zone, but protests have mostly been peaceful. And Judge Perry says the narrative of events presented by the Department of Homeland Security is, quote, simply unreliable. Sergio Martinez Beltran, NPR News, Chicago. Separately, a federal appeals court is weighing whether Trump can deploy National Guard troops on the streets of Portland, Oregon. This is NPR. President Trump will go for a physical checkup today at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
Starting point is 00:03:30 The White House says the president is in good health. Pope Leo is highlighting the plight of the world's poor. A new Vatican document says the world and the church must pay more attention to them. NPR's Jason D. Rose has more. The document called I Have Loved You says that the message of Christ was to care for the poor. Pope Leo says the issue of economic disparity is acute with the rich. accumulating more and more wealth and the poor becoming more and more destitute. He calls on Christians not only to engage in acts of charity to alleviate suffering,
Starting point is 00:04:03 but also to work against systems, which he calls sinful that perpetuate poverty. And Pope Leo highlights the plight of migrants, as well as his own time working in Latin America, where Catholic leaders have long taught that the church must prioritize the rights and needs of the poor and the powerless. Jason DeRose, NPR News. Weather forecasters are watching storms in two different parts of the U.S. The remnants of Tropical Storm Priscilla, now swirling in the Pacific Ocean, are expected to storm across Mexico over the weekend. This could move into the U.S. southwest, pouring very heavy rain on desert regions
Starting point is 00:04:40 that are not used to getting this much precipitation. Separately, another storm system is off the U.S. East Coast. The National Weather Service says the potential nor'easter will bring flooding, heavy rain, and gusty winds to the region throughout early next week. There are also dangers from heavy surf and life-threatening rip currents on the coast. You're listening to NPR.
