NPR reporters on the ground bring you stories of real people, helping you understand why distant events matter here at home. Listen to sources and methods on the NPR app or wherever you get your podcasts. Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Corva Coleman. This year's Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to Venice,
Starting point is 00:00:30 opposition activist Maria Kurina Machado. The Nobel Committee says Machado has been tireless in promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela against dictatorship. The Israeli military says the ceasefire between Hamas and Israel has come into effect. Israel says it's getting ready for the return of hostages and pulling back its troops in accordance with the plan. But Israel says it will be ready for any new threat. 200 U.S. troops will be heading to Israel to help monitor and implement the Gaza ceasefire. NPR's Quill Lawrence reports the troops will not be on the ground in Gaza. U.S. troops with expertise and logistics will set up a civilian military coordination center in Israel to help with the expected flood of humanitarian aid into Gaza. The narrow strip of land has
Starting point is 00:01:15 been subjected to intense bombardment for two years as the Israeli army sought to eliminate Hamas after the October 7th surprise attack on Israel. That initial attack killed more than 1,200 people, mostly Israeli civilians. The ensuing war has killed more than 67,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza's health ministry, also mostly civilians. In a social media post, the White House says troops under U.S. Central Command would coordinate with other nations in the region that will create an international stabilization force in Gaza as outlined in President Trump's peace plan. Starting point is 00:01:56 to Portland. From Oregon Public Broadcasting, Conrad Wilson reports. The Justice Department argues the president has sweeping authority to federalize and deploy the guard over Oregon Governor Tina Kotech's objections. Trump wants 200 federalized National Guard members to help protect a U.S. immigration facility in Portland. Federal law allows the president to deploy the National Guard if there's an invasion, a rebellion, or if the president cannot enforce federal laws with regular forces. But the limitations of that authority were fiercely debated during this hearing. Attorneys with the state of Oregon and city of Portland

For NPR News, I'm Conrad Wilson in Portland. A federal judge has also temporarily blocked Trump from deploying National Guard troops in the Chicago area. The Justice Department has indicted New York Attorney General Letitia James on two criminal counts involving bank fraud. In a video statement, James alleges she was charged because she successfully sued Trump for lying about the value of his own properties. These charges are baseless, and the president's own public statements make clear that his only goal is political retribution at any cost. Trump just installed the prosecutor who brought charges against James.
Starting point is 00:03:14 The same prosecutor indicted former FBI director James Comey for allegedly lying to Congress. He says he's innocent. It's NPR. This is day 10 of the federal government shutdown. The Senate has failed to agree on new spending bills offered yesterday by both Republicans and Democrats. Monday is a federal holiday, so it doesn't appear that any resolution will be reached for several more days. Meanwhile, the Trump administration has started airing a video in airports across the country. It features Homeland Security Secretary Kristy Noem.
Starting point is 00:03:47 In the video, she's blaming Democrats for the shutdown. North Korea is hosting foreign leaders for a series of events, including today's military parade.
